DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

Apparently Garcia can opt-out of the deal if not on the roster by March 25. So if he doesn't make the team he can become a free agent, if he makes the team he will make 1.25 million with another 1.25 in incentives to be had (2.5 million total if incentives are reached).

Beachy insurance policy. Can't hurt to have guys with experience like Floyd and Garcia lurking to help ease a little of the burden of expectation on Beachy and Wood.

As mentioned - Wood can start the season in the pen to help limit his innings. Then if/when Venters is ready, he can be sent to Gwinnett for a few weeks to get stretched out again. At that point, Floyd should be ready to go as well. Keeps Wren from having to start any of the younger guys' clocks early in the season. If Garcia struggles or someone in Gwinnett is on fire Freddy can always be released.

What expectations does Beachy have at this point? His career is in serious jeopardy.

We need depth, so whatever...but that is too much for Garcia, and I wanted us to sign someone early to AVOID signing another Garcia or Loe. Instead we go ahead and get Garcia.

It seems Garcia can actually make 3 million if he starts for us. DOB reports: "I'm told incentives package for #Braves Garcia includes up to additional $1.75M for starts or up to $1M for relief appearances." The previous report was 1.25M in incentives, maybe next update old Freddy will be up for 4 million with incentives...

Wren: "Anytime you have the chance, and be able to get 2 pitchers for the price of one, it is doubling down on the fact that pitchers get injured, and we are going into this next season with great depth. Freddy's a pitcher that has experience and a World Series ring, and can step up and help us in a pinch, whether it be in a starting or relieving role. We are excited to have a pitcher the caliber and with the experience that Freddy has on our roster, and he will be a tremendous influence on all of the young pitchers of the staff. Like John (Schuerholz) stated earlier, we believe that we have assembled a pitching staff that rivals that of the mid 90's."

DOB adds: "Told that #Braves Garcia has made it clear doesn't want to go back to AAA, has opt-out March 25 if not on MLB roster, is confident will be"

Sounds like Garcia was signed for the Majors, not just for AAA depth. If he makes the team, then my guess is that he'll start out our long man (formerly Martinez role and the role Garcia filled a bit this past Sept).

Looks like the ace of the Beaneaters in the '90s is still around and looking for a job -

What is Wren waiting for? Looks like he throws a mean hairball.

True, but the rock he throws is his best pitch. He perfected it while stoning to death the people that tried cutting his hair.

Wren when asked to clarify on having staff that rivals that of the 90's:

"What I mean, is that we have great confidence in our young guys. We believe that Minor, Medlen, and Tehran are at a phase in their growth process where we believe that they will make that next jump and be household top of the rotation starters. Look at Minor last season, tremendous growth overall, and not just talking about productivity, its a mental process thing. Medlen was tremendous the second half of the year and Tehran had a phenominal rookie campaign. All of those guys are solid starters right now, but they still have growth. And I didn't even mention Brandon Beachy or Alex Wood, who we think highly of, and believe they have a tremendous amount of growth potential as well. I mean, back in 1990; Smoltz, Glavine, and Avery werent household names but in 91 all of them took the next step and became so. Two of them are going to be HOF's. But then those guys had Charlie Liebrandt. Garcia and Floyd give us too solid depth options, whether it be in the pen or rotation, to be able to go out there and give us quality innings, and hedge against injuries, which are inevitable."

If Freddy is decent, even for a few months, this is not a bad deal. After seeing what kind of money good starting pitching is getting now 2 mill for a halfway decent junkballer is not too much. When Floyd is ready Freddy can shift to the bullpen and handle middle innings, long man when needed, or we can just dump him if he's really bad.

The March 25th opt out pretty much kills any chance of him going to Gwinnett but that's no doubt what it took to get him to sign. If he doesn't get it done in Spring training we're not out any signifigent money.

All you guys bitching about this signing wait till you see what Maholm gets, and he isn't any better than Freddy, IMO.
