DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

If Freddy is decent, even for a few months, this is not a bad deal. After seeing what kind of money good starting pitching is getting now 2 mill for a halfway decent junkballer is not too much. When Floyd is ready Freddy can shift to the bullpen and handle middle innings, long man when needed, or we can just dump him if he's really bad.

The March 25th opt out pretty much kills any chance of him going to Gwinnett but that's no doubt what it took to get him to sign. If he doesn't get it done in Spring training we're not out any signifigent money.

All you guys bitching about this signing wait till you see what Maholm gets, and he isn't any better than Freddy, IMO.

Maholm is so much better than Garcia. It isn't even close. He had a bad year pitching through injuries (and still pitched better than Garcia has any chance of doing).

DOB adds: "Told that #Braves Garcia has made it clear doesn't want to go back to AAA, has opt-out March 25 if not on MLB roster, is confident will be"

Sounds like Garcia was signed for the Majors, not just for AAA depth. If he makes the team, then my guess is that he'll start out our long man (formerly Martinez role and the role Garcia filled a bit this past Sept).

Here's something to remember, signing Garcia allows them to have him as the 5th starter and gives them the option of having Alex Wood as a second lefty out of the bullpen and as mentioned before insurance for Garcia. I don't mind this signing, the one I'm still scratching my head over is the waste of 4 million bucks given to Gavin Floyd. At least Garcia pitched last year and is healthy.

Signing Garcia is underwhelming, but it makes way more sense than the Floyd signing.

Garcia is in the rotation if Beachy or Wood falter, or they need Wood in the BP to start the year. Floyd basically added no flexibility, and I have no idea why he was signed.

Even though things are a bit clouded by his coming back from elbow surgery, imo Floyd is likely to be a much better pitcher than Garcia in 2014.

It really isn't sufficient to go into a season with five starters. You really need seven or eight guys who project as quality major league pitchers. I would put Garcia behind Floyd and Hale and maybe a couple of the others slated for Gwinnett in our depth chart for starting pitching.

What? If Floyd comes back from his injury okay, he's a far far better option than Garcia or anyone we have in the minors.

Wren when asked to clarify on having staff that rivals that of the 90's:

"What I mean, is that we have great confidence in our young guys. We believe that Minor, Medlen, and Tehran are at a phase in their growth process where we believe that they will make that next jump and be household top of the rotation starters. Look at Minor last season, tremendous growth overall, and not just talking about productivity, its a mental process thing. Medlen was tremendous the second half of the year and Tehran had a phenominal rookie campaign. All of those guys are solid starters right now, but they still have growth. And I didn't even mention Brandon Beachy or Alex Wood, who we think highly of, and believe they have a tremendous amount of growth potential as well. I mean, back in 1990; Smoltz, Glavine, and Avery werent household names but in 91 all of them took the next step and became so. Two of them are going to be HOF's. But then those guys had Charlie Liebrandt. Garcia and Floyd give us too solid depth options, whether it be in the pen or rotation, to be able to go out there and give us quality innings, and hedge against injuries, which are inevitable."

Okay, let's take 1991.

Fangraph WAR for the top three starters

Glavine 5.5

Smoltz 3.8

Avery 2.7

Average of 4 WAR

I could realistically see Medlen, Minor and Teheran averaging out to a 4 WAR this year.

ZiPS has a WAR projection for Medlen (3.9), Minor (3.7), and Teheran (3.5).

Now WAR doesn't tell the whole story obviously, but I'm trying to help the brass out.

Dude, it's a joke. Wren never said that. And Schuerholz never said the stuff in his other posts.

Too deadpan, I guess.

Janish and Elliot Johnson both signed minor leagues deals today, Janish with Col and EJ with Cleve. Doubt we even offered either.

As much as I like those 3, people tend to forget how good Beachy really was, he posted a 3.07 ERA and 9.5 K/9 in 237 2/3 innings (41 starts) between 2010 and 2012. Those numbers guys are top of the rotation stuff. Add him, healthy, to the other 3 and we might be better than anyone thinks

I will have to see Beachy perform well in the spring before I jump back on his bandwagon, but if he's back, he along with Alex Wood gives this rotation great potential. I've been down on this team this offseason, but it's not because of our pitching.

Beachy had a 3.25 FIP in that span too which is really good. The only thing with Beachy is 1) can he come back to the from he had before his surgery and 2) can he go deeper into games. He only averaged 5 2/3 innings per start. If he can finish the 6th and go into the 7th inning regularly then he'll be well on his way.

Then what are you down on? Even with 2 huge offensive holes with BJ and Dan this was still the 3rd best offense in the NL last year. The only legit question I could see someone having is how well will Gattis replace Macs overall numbers. Dan I do think is a lost cause but BJ has more ability then that and I don't think he's done. The Braves were also 6th in defense (thanks largely to Simmons and Heyward) so there shouldn't be many issues there overall. Keeping Gattis out of left will only improve those numbers as will Jason not getting hit in the face and keeping him out for weeks.

This team is very well rounded. Barring injuries I see this team being in the top 5 in offense, defense, and pitching. Whether that's good enough to win the East will remain to be seen but we will be in contention for the division and wild card at worst. Can't really ask much more then that with the market/tv contract we have.

BJ, Uggla, Gattis, Simmons (offensively), pitcher. Yuck.

I think Freeman is going to have a hell of year, though.

Gattis and Simmons are very likely to improve offensively as their BABIPs were on the very low side. That said Gattis still had a wrc+ of 110 which is obviously above average thanks to his power. And yet the Braves were still the 3rd best offensive in the league even with Simmons playing all year and Gattis getting a chuck of time. So even if they stay the same (which is unlikely) it's still a good offense.
