DOGE

And the government we’re trying to make more effective will be worse off for it. But at least those good employees will get to experience having their lives upended and to frantically look for new jobs while we reduce the talent level.

Are you just negative all the time or just toward the US Government laughable track record of effectiveness?

I know it counters your worldview, but I promise you federal employees are terrible. Its where mediocre at best talent goes to lock in easy money and insane benefits with no expectations of performance. Even if someone goes in talented, the lack of performance culture eventually turns those people into leeches too

I work very closely with a huge government contractor and they laugh at useless the federal employees are, [tw]and this is on the defense side![/tw] It's why the fed spends so much on contractors bc they have no talent

An indiscriminate 50% layoff wouldn't be noticed

Likely the worst of the bunch with how much money we waste on this.

When it comes to this topic I’m just as negative about the private sector. Leadership development is something I’m passionate about and I’ve had many objections to the way companies have clung on to inefficient ways of doing things. Companies don’t focus enough on proper and effective leadership and the push to bring people back into the office is often a byproduct of that inefficiency.

Its pervasive across the whole government.

But this specific move wouldn’t be to fix that problem, it’d be a shortcut. Which, at the end of the day whatever, but I don’t see why claiming that this would be a lazy solution is so controversial.

Its the most cost effective solution - What you want would take years and cost more money than save.

I mean there’s a concerted effort to rid the world of Drug cartels, human smugglers, and sex slavers….you poo poo it

There’s a concerted effort to rid the govt of waste so your tax dollar goes further, or is refunded, and you **** on that too

The only thing I haven’t seen you poo poo is Laken Riley’s murderer flying around the country on tax payer funds (that your beloved president orchestrated)

All of this is so so so so true.

I don’t have any objections to going after criminals. I have objections to the process of these things that are being suggested by conservatives, and I have major objections to the collateral damage of that process.

If you want me to be deeply upset by a murderer, I’m happy to oblige. But I’m not going to base the rest of my opinions on immigrants over the fact that I’m deeply upset with that murderer. And until we stop spending billions to help kill innocent people abroad I’m not going to spend too much of my time objecting to the fact that we spent money on this particular murderer.

I guess its a sort of moral pillar to die on but very foolish one.

Trumps talking about sending Tier 1 operators in on cartels and traffickers... Not sure how you get more surgical than that but by all means get upset at the effort made instead.

Either I deeply don’t understand how funding allocation works, or some people are expecting Elon and Vivek to do way more than they actually can. How is this any different than the Trump Admin submitting a government budget proposal?

Yes. This is gonna get annoying if they keep making proclamation of big cuts, taking credit for it, but nothing ends up happening bc we require congress

Does that guy have actual sources. Think he has been identified as spreading nonsense in the past.

I don't see anyone else reporting this.

If you are a self-motivated high performer, you don't work for the federal government

Sorry

This not true for the weather enterprise. If you want to work in operational meteorology, the National Weather Service is one of the hardest places to get a job and we have a ton of pride working there. And we work our asses off, staffing the offices and issuing life saving alerts and warnings 24/7, 365 days a year. There is a lot of bloat in government… I hope we trim the right stuff. Thankfully we have a massive amount of support in congress and our mission is codified into law with the Weather Bill. That being said, many of our offices are short staffed and I’m sure those spots will not be filled for a long time which is going to hurt many offices incredibly bad. Senator’s Kramer and Hoeven toured our office with their families last month and they were very impressed. I’ve also come to be on a first name basis with Governor Burgum working on state reports for extreme weather events.

There are certainly areas of government that earn my respect more than others, and I'm sure weather is an area where reaching that area is the pinnacle of the field

(I don't see why we would need a public national weather service, though?)

We provide free warnings and life saving alerts. If it is privatized… people are paying for alerts. Hardly fair for poor people who are most vulnerable. Private companies don’t want the liability for public warnings. We also own the complete national weather radar network and 90+ percent of the weather data in the country. Private corporations cannot afford to maintain and support all of that. They just want to use our data for free.

Of course we aren’t working remotely though… we have to be at the office to monitor the crazy amounts of data that’s pumped through every minute. Once I had to work 3 straight shifts because a blizzard wouldn’t allow the subsequent shifts to get to the office. That was fun… me and my partner were sleeping in 3 hour shifts on a blowup mattress in the conference room lol. We are rotating shift workers and I’ve had to issue tornado warnings for population centers at 3am before. People have died in weather events I’ve warned for… it’s not the best part of the job. But I like to think we’ve saved a lot of lives.

Couldn't the feds just pay the local weather businesses for their data to push alerts?

I agree weather service is essential service but not sold why we need something out of Washington DC
