Economics Thread

I thought Trump was supposed to be the one that knew about business and the economy.

Oh he understands that maximizing GDP shouldn’t be a societal goal if it comes by the detriment of the working man. That’s why he’s where he is today.

thethe aint wrong in pointing out GDP has some flaws as a measure of the health of an economy and society

it leaves out a lot of important things, such as the quality of the water we drink and air we breathe

it leaves out distributional issues

of course it is still a very useful measure...per capita GDP is a pretty good summary of the overall standard of living

i think we all know this

GDP is a horribly flawed metric. But I'm not arguing for maximizing GDP, I'm arguing for maximizing productivity and safety

Lol

Talk about dog whistles

Where were this posts when Biden funded Hamas and the like in Iran?

Pretty empty there pal

Whether Biden or Trump, you can't fix the idiocy of leftism

There is an article of faith among Donald Trump’s most vociferous defenders that he fights for the right’s causes and convictions with a vigor that exposes the old-guard GOP’s capitulatory spinelessness. This tenet of the MAGA movement is unfalsifiable insofar as whatever Trump’s priorities are at the moment automatically become the right’s priorities, even if they might have been core Democratic principles only a few minutes earlier.

RDS descriptor of "listless vessels" was too perfect.

Only trump could make the GOP embrace the most idiotic leftist ideas. But they will loudly support anything he says as if it's their core principles. He's managed to turn thethe from a hardcore right winger to a proud socialist in less than 3 years

Not sure the right thread to put this in, but thought this data was interesting.

I've long thought Dems have a strategy to keep people single - especially women. They know it breeds misery and resentment, and those traits lead to reliable votes for (D)

1) Doesn’t the married sample size include the “very happily married” respondents? I don’t think anybody is suggesting there are not emotional benefits to being very happily married. How do the odds increase based on a “less than very happy” marriage.

2) >$60k is a low bar for “higher” earning. Even if that’s above a median point, your quality of life is probably not being positively impacted in this economy as a single income at $60k per year and when someone is “choosing a career over family” I’m guessing that’s not the amount of money they’re earning or expect to earn. Plus married folks have to work too and if they both have an income of $60,000 they’re probably in an okay place financially. So the poll is actively tipping the scales toward married people being more happy with their criteria.

3) This also might be more of an indictment on our living conditions and career expectations. The questions to ask around marriage vs. non-marriage as a determinant for happiness should really center more around having a hobby they’re passionate about or close friends or something outside of work. Again, the only directly positive life trait outside of work listed is for a very happy marriage and happily married people are possibly propping up marriage and depressing the results of single people earning $60k a year in **** jobs.

I’m in the happily married camp and understand the benefits. But the only thing I can glean from this is that college isn’t impactful for a lot of people, which is already obvious and is one thing I hope gets fixed through the promotion of the trades.
