Economics Thread

My least progressive opinion is probably that the government does not owe it to us to age in comfort. Use Medicare funding toward retirement homes to allow for basic needs of seniors to be met and if they want more than that they can save for retirement or work.

The sad part is there are plenty of potential ways to land the plane, but to chop’s point, it’s politically expedient for both parties to champion the status quo and pretend the other party isn’t doing the exact same thing.

The crazy thing to me is that the Dems should probably be the ones to put it to bed, but they don’t realize that. Want to get back the young vote? Stop taking from their paychecks to give it to a program that is giving to the people that they perceive as getting them into this mess. Want to win back some fiscally conservative folks that don’t actually care if trans people are around or other social issues? Pull the plug on a massive government program. Want to get rid of the talking points on fraud and waste in Social Security? Kill it all right now and call the bluff.

I don’t disagree. This is a program that takes from the relatively poor and gives to the relatively rich. If you want to win a battle in the class war, this front would be a hell of a lot more impactful than something like cancelling student loans.

No one wants to live in a society where grandma and grandpa are destitute and don’t have the capability to provide for themselves.

mqt is probably closest to the pin to what a politically palatable solution might look like.
