Economics Thread

Yeah - All those people who 'learned how to code' are ****ed.

Any entry level programmer is basically irrelevant and if not now in less than 5 years.

AI displacing workers is inevitable. Every person in this thread should worry about their job security.

In my lifetime, people will prefer to get surgery done by a robot than a doctor.

You misremembered

Well then I apologize but I am still talking about basic things that most people could learn within 3-6 months of studying.

Think the software is too far away to do anything better than that. I've seen lots of videos on ChatGPT and how it can help with Python/DAX/Excel. Its still in its infancy and require manual intervention after a general outline of a script is created. You need to know how to program to fix these issues.

Plus - You have to be able to speak to the software in a way it can convert the language to code. Joe Schmo off the street can't do that.

Just wait til the next update .. it's leveraging something like 1,000x more data

You still need to be able to speak somewhat intelligently to the software. Innovation is possible but as the saying goes 'garbage in garbage out'.

That's funny. What's even funnier is when ChatGPT starts to get monetized. Lots of people are gonna be ****ed then.

I went out to dinner with my wife's practices owner last weekend... He was out of the loop on this. I showed him and he tested a few things on it like writing safety protocols and marketing email scripts.

He was blown away and said that it's as good or better as the team he hires to do those things... I poured one out for the people who are probably gonna be replaced there soon

I disagree. ChatGPT isn't close to replacing anybody. It's basically a better version of stackoverflow right now. Like you said, you have to know what to tell it to get anything useful. It's going to help developers be more efficient, not replace them.

Now maybe that won't be the case in the future but that's going to be true for a lot of jobs as AI gets better.

Anyone that writes for a living is massively ****ed

Its going to replace entry level coders as people higher on the chain won't need to delegate that stuff.

BUt anyone above entry level is safe for now and I don't see how that is going to change any time in the near future.

I wish this was around when I was writing dumb papers for college. But yeah, that's a position that could be irrelevant soon. You want to be the person that can efficiently use ChatGPT to get what you want out of it.

We'll see. For developers I think it will just be more of a tool to increase productivity and not straight up replacement. Version 4 is supposed to be out at some point this year so it will be interesting to see what progress has been made.
