Extension Talks With Swanson Reportedly Underway

Then at the minimum Dansby is a willing co-conspirator. It’s not Close getting back at AA as some in this thread have suggested.

I think it can be as simple as Dansby and the Braves are discussing a contract extension.

But, it may be Close trying to gain leverage, which suggests either Dansby is willing to walk, or Close still doesn't understand how AA works.

I am not suggesting Close is trying to get back at Alex, just that he may still be using the tough guy negotiating techniques that he tried with Freddie.

That would be dumb because Dansby is nowhere near as important to this franchise as Freddie was. AA isn’t going to get in his feelings over Dansby Swanson.

AA is going to do the same thing with Swanson that he did with FF. Here’s our offer. Take it or leave it. No way he goes anywhere hear 6/150. He wouldn’t go to that for FF. And FF is a much better player than Swanson.

Is 6/150 the rumor? If it is he won’t get that here. I’d rather pay more for Correa.

What do people think he is? His second half wrc+ isn't great.

I think he's closer to a league average hitter than the highs of 15% or 20% above avg he's had. Defense is very good.

We've been over that the obvious other options are very expensive.

5/100 is what I would be targeting. Still has him off the books before he's 35. Maybe add on some team options at 25 or 30 million. I assume he's looking at 6/150.

Y'all need to calm down about the 6/$150M speculation. This is where it came from. They may want six, and I guess I could squint real hard and live with that at $20M, but Russ is the only one who's posited $25M per. I think that's unlikely.

I think Dansby has a great body type to age well - very lean and twitchy - he's 28, and they had him with sprint speed over 30 earlier this year...so while he'll lose a step by 34, he has a step to lose. Fan favorite/local boy/defacto captain premium, I can get there.

Alex will likely prefer 5/$100M (or even $90M), and Dans may have to choose.

I think this is pretty accurate, with a caveat

Swanson will be seen as the "cheap star" option for SS this year, and several teams may be looking to jump into the contender group. Teams like that would think they are smart by overpaying Swanson $150M rather than giving the seemingly more elite options $300M.

That's my fear...some dumb wannabe contender (next year's Rangers or Tigers) will overpay.

I really hope this doesn't get done at anywhere near the cost people are throwing around. No thanks. If we are going to pay premium rates, I'd like a premium player.

He's 3rd in fWAR among SS's the last 3 years. That seems premium

His value is weighted more towards defense though right?

Youd expect his defense to dip.

That's why you get him for much less than turner, Correa, and Xander. Dansby over the last 3 years is pretty much lindor with the bat. Lindor has a small advantage in wrc+, and dansby has a small advantage in wOBA.

I wouldn't wanna do 6/150, but 6/120 would be great imo

25 per for Swanson won’t happen in Atlanta. But like FF if it goes to FA all bets are off. I’d go after Correa bc he bat will still play if his defense starts to decline.

After these extensions, would there be money for Correa? Guess you could not pick up Morton, but then you need money for that spot

I think Morton’s option is picked up barring injury or retirement. There’s no such thing as a bad one year contract.

They said the Braves expect to have a top 5 payroll soon. And with the amount of money coming off the books this offseason it is quite possible we go after an ace pitcher or stud SS

I do t know anything about our budget these days, but I’d rather sign Degrom and let Dansby walk. Get a pick, lose a pick.

We could give Grissom first shot, then we have Shewmake/Conley/Waddell that all could be major league ready by some point next year if they decide he’s an OF

Have to throw out the 2020 season - for everybody, not just Dansby.

When you do that, you realize this is the first time in his career he's produced better than a 98 wRC+ full year - and there are still almost 6 weeks left for him to potentially regress back towards his career norms.
