Folty headed back to Atlanta

No but you are trying to develop the guy. He should be in AAA developing (and not accumulating service time) until/if he proves he can't be a starter. You've got a number of warm bodies who could have taken that role.

Not disagreeing. In fact, just saw the guy pitch at AAA level last week, and believe that he should be there longer.

I'm sorry but I can't get the image out of my head of Folty coughing up a five run lead to the Mets to include surrendering successive inning home runs to titans like Dilson Herrera and Darrell Ciciliani. I realize it's only one horrible outing but once it's been seen, it can't be "unseen."

Medlen's arm got killed because he's 5-10.

Not sure if you meant that tongue-in-cheek or not.

These data demonstrate that there is no statistical evidence that shorter pitchers are more or less durable than taller pitchers. The statistics suggest that they are just as prone to each type of injury, they recover at the same rate and they get injured as often. Given that durability is the most often cited concern for baseball executives when drafting shorter pitchers, the evidence in this study that durability does not correlate to a pitcher’s height is highly significant. Brad Steil explained the prevailing theory as “You know, a large, strong body is more durable in general.”4 However, the data contradict that claim.

Anyone have any insight as to his service time? I know he got some time in late last year with the Astros but has he been down enough this year to get us another year of team control if he stays up the rest of the year?

He's not a FA until 2021.

This is just stupid. He is very raw and needs to develop as a starter.

I think he's a reliever. Maybe a really good one.

He shouldn't be raw at this age and stage. If he is, then you need to look at what he might be successful at.

I do not think the jury is out on him starting. I saw his eight inning shutout when he looked anything but raw. But his command is so in and out... I feel like he's one of those tantalizing arms you don't want to quit, because what if he does put it together? You've got Nolan Ryan. But most of the time you get Scipio Spinks.

This is simply a move to give the bullpen another viable option for these last 6 games prior to the AS Break. He will then go back down and resume his career as a starter.

Most successful short pitchers are/were LHP. The problem with shorter pitchers is that it is difficult for them to get and maintain the leverage necessary for the ball not to flatten out. Medlen wasn't a "trick-pitch" pitcher. He had a straightforward arsenal and for him to be successful, he had to stay on top of the ball. That was difficult for him to do and I think it's led to injuries. Medlen is a little guy.

Mike Foltynewicz was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett. This is just part of the plan to allow him to continue serving as starting pitcher

The right move. As long as there is a decent chance he can develop as a starter, you want to give him that chance. As things currently stand we do NOT have a surplus of starting pitchers for 2016. With injuries and all, you want to start each season with about 8 guys who are nearly major league ready starters. You stash 1 or 2 in the pen and 1 or 2 in AAA and bring them into the rotation as needed. Right now I count seven guys who could potentially start for us in 2016: Teheran, Wood, Miller, Baby Harang, Banuelos, Wisler and Folty. The others in our system have yet to prove themselves in AA.

Baby harang = Perez?

Lol, why?

Except that 2-3 of those options always end up being guys like Wandy, Stultz, and the real Harang. The Braves can easily afford to trade a couple of those arms in the offseason and replace them in the BP or AAA with veteran 5th starter types.

I actually favor this approach for depth purposes. I'd give a few veterans minor league deals and try to stash at least one decent one in Gwinnett for depth purposes. Then you just cut the other at the end of ST if no room in the rotation. Plus another way to do it is like Texas did, wait till someone like us cuts someone like Wandy and then grab them on a minor league deal at the end of spring training.
