Freddie to third base??

As stated, this is just a way to jack up the price on Adams. It'll never happen.

It's just a ploy to keep the "casual" fan (who knows nothing about the farm system) happy and that the major league club is committed to winning. It's all about the butts in the seats. It's also to keep the "casual" fan from bitching about trading another MLB player for prospects. These fans on twitter and Facebook make me laugh with how ignorant they are when it comes to the future.

I think a mildly weird reaction to the idea of playing Freeman at 3B is..."well what could it hurt."

Theoretically nothing, but why play Freeman at catcher to see if that fills a need under that rationale. Or SS.

Does this response mean Cameron thinks Freeman to 3B has merit?

12:04 This "Freddie Freeman to third base" talk can't be something the Braves' front office is seriously considering, can it? I just can't imagine any other course of action for a still-rebuilding club besides dealing Matt Adams while his value is as high as it's been in years.

Dave Cameron
12:04 I think you're probably overrating how much the league would react to Adams having a hot month. He got traded for nothing not long ago; teams aren't going to think he's suddenly great now.
The idea that Adams could be flipped for some kind of real return is probably false.

12:07 Which is a worse idea, Matt Adams in left or Freddie Freeman at third?

Dave Cameron

12:08 Adams in left. Freeman was an average-ish first baseman, maybe even above average, with a strong arm. If he's a -10 3B, okay, well, that's still better than what they had.

And it's not like -10 3Bs don't get played.

I feel confident he would be a good bit worse than -10 at 3B. Even removing the severe lack of range from the equation, the last time he played 3B was in the GCL for 5 games...he had 3 errors in those 5 games.

It just came to me... If FF is at 3B and KEMvP in LF.. think of how much closer FF is to KEMvP now. He can engage full protection both on offense and defense...

He didn't have matt Adams scooping balls for him haha

I really hope this happens just to read the melt round here

I'm not sure why the idea of having Matt Adams on the bench is such a bad thing. He'd be the best bench bat we've had in 4 years.

I'm just asking:

What is the relative value of Manny Machado with one remaining year of control and Freddie Freeman?

Which side has to kick in the extra in that scenario?

Opinions?

1. I don't think this will happen, and is probably just the Braves trying to drive the price of Adam's up for teams that want him with the "Fine, we'll just keep him." bluff.

2. It's not "so" far fetched because Freddie was a 3rd baseman. He knows the position and was probably moved because they had Chipper. Let's say he's horrible. We probably win a few games with Adams bat and loose a few with Freddie's mishaps at 3rd. It's probably a wash and even if it looses us a few...just gives us a better draft pick. We then keep Adams as a bench bat or trade him in the offseason.

3. I doubt it happens, but a lineup with Adams, Kemp and Freddie in the middle (assuming Adams doesn't regress...which is possible), would be pretty nasty. Where is the weak spot 1-8 with Dansby hitting now.

If we kept Simba then we could have just gone with Kemp and Adams in LF for a normal LF range. 4 OF, softball style. Just let Simba play deep and man the left side himself.

We should be looking to see if we can get anyone to bite on Kemp, Neck or Adams anyway IMO. I assume this is leverage for trade talks. Otherwise just rotate guys through for a while.

I don't know why ppl assume Adams will be a great bench bat. He seems to really enjoy playing everyday. Some people struggle in the PH role. Maybe he can be Hinske or Matt Diaz but it's not guaranteed.

3B should be Rio or Comargo. Playing FF at 3B just seems like a bad experiment in how much defense matters for the board to fight about.

Oh, you mean Matt Adams, the guy with a HR/FB rate of 27% with the Braves.

Let's see what happens when that rate normalizes to his usual rate of about half that value....

HRs go from 10 to 5. Those 5 missing HRs turn into 1 double and 4 fly outs based on a BABIP of ~.200 on fly balls.

Suddenly, Adams' line is .261/.317/.478 (.796 OPS).

Or....almost exactly his career line.

Adams is not a true talent .900 OPS hitter. He is a true talent sub .800 OPS hitter. That's why he has little trade value. That's why the Braves got him for Yepez.

A few weeks with a lucky HR/FB doesn't change any of that. Sorry, msstake7.

Yeah, I have strong doubts he can sustain his .910 ops. He does seem to hit well at suntrust though... hit hr vs braves earlier this season. He's ops'd in .830s before in over 300 PAs earlier in his career though and he's in the best shape of his professional career. Who knows where he finishes with his ops?
