That was an amazing moment. All I remember about that game was the down after Dempsey's shot was saved and assumed it would have been swept away. Dempsey really had a fantastic game that day just didn't find a goal, first was the BS offsides, then the time he hit the crossbar then missed the net on the comeback, then his shot was saved there. It seemed like the day Dempsey was fated to not find the back of the net.

Of course the kicker is without ****ty reffing the previous game the US would have not even needed that goal.

Donovan looked terrible in the Mexico friendly. He looked fat and sluggish. Nothing like his Gold Cup form. Sucks not having him there, but I see what Klinsman is doing. Speed will be extremely important against Ghana. Green was obviously promised a spot on the squad. Yedlin is extremely fast.

I don't know about leaving Donovan off. Seems a spot could be made for him.

I love that video. The one dude in Lincoln, NE saw the goal a couple seconds before everyone else.

That's really the problem. Donovan is in the worst form he's ever been in. This is not the time to do that. Personally just for his knack of scoring in big games I would have left Yedlin off and put Landon there. I think Klinsmann has Johnson in his mind as a flex. He could move to mid or he could defend.

I really wonder if the US is considering making a heavier attacking move.

What I'd love to see is a 4-1-2-1-2 back 4 of Johnson, Besler, Gonzilla, and Beasley (I kind of hope Timmy is in form and unseats him but I don't think that will happen), have Cameron holding as a central defender. Have Zusi and Bradley in a creative mid situation, Dempsey behind Jozy and Johansson. Pretty much leave the defenders back especially against portugal (cannot let Ronaldo run on the US) I would love to keep the game wide though. Gonzilla is a monster in the air and the strikers for Germany, Portugal, and Ghana I don't think will be able to match up to him in the air and Besler is smart and can keep the play out wide and watch runs. I'm concerned though about Ronaldo coming from wide to the middle which I think Cameron will help with.

That's of course just me. Klinsmann is much smarter than I and considering what he's done in his short term as the US Coach I'll gladly follow him.

Well, only guys JMO you could argue leaving off for him are Yedlin, Brooks, Green, and maybe Davis. Davis because he's old an doesn't have the US experience that Donovan. Davis though has been in amazing form in MLS and has done great for the US in his apps. Green is speed. The US needs speed off the bench. When Shea didn't make the final 30 that basically left Green as the only speedy winger. Davis and Donovan are more technique driven at this point so they don't compete with Green on the speed side. Brooks I'm shocked made it. I thought Goodson was a lock, especially after that terrible showing by Brooks in the last friendly he was in.

I kind of also think that the inclusion of Brooks, Green, and YEdlin has more to do with 2018 than 2014 as all 3 of them are almost certain to be starting then and are likely fixtures in the US lineup for years. If DOnovan was in even decent form he would have made the team.

Playing for club is completely playing for country. Not only that, playing qualifiers against Jamaica are completely different than playing Portugal. Donovan has experienced that and performed. Who know what form anyone will be in in 3 weeks?

Leaving Donovan off could be a critical mistake of Klinsmann. He's the perfect guy to bring on with 15 mins left in need of a goal. Really can't keep him in over Brad Davis? Seriously?

Donovan hasn't been in form for country since the Gold Cup. I mean I would probably have brought him if I was picking the team without the intimate knowledge that Klinsmann has of the situation. I wouldn't have brought Yedlin (seems kind of silly to have 2 backup FBs when Cameron can play there as well) and brought Donovan. Of course if I was building the team I wouldn't let Beckerman anywhere on it. Klinsmann likes him, probably because he's an A++++++ effort guy. I have a hunch he really helps on the training ground, but being honest, I hate watching him play. He turns the ball over seemingly everytime he touches it.

And you don't know what Klinsmann is thinking for his bench. If we look at the assumed midfield bench of something like Bedoya (though he may start) Davis (could also start) Green, Mix (could start if they view the winger as a creative role, Zusi is also a creative central mid) and Beckerman (defense) they all fill different roles. Davis I have a sneaking position will start and be pulled for Green or Bedoya regularly. And what if that is what it came down to? DOnovan vs Davis to start? Would you still hold the same opinion?

If you're running a 4-4-2 of some form who else would oyu play? Bedoya and Green are your other options. I think Klinsmann goes with a new lineup myself.

Unfortunately nothing the US does may work. If they get out of group Klinsmann is officially my idol. Germany and Portugal are too good.

"I can’t train 12 straight days in a row and have 12 great days in a row. Physically, it is not possible. My body breaks down; I'm getting older."

Really great article. Sheds a different light from someone who's seen the training. Donovan seemed to know he was likely to get cut. ALso found the comment about Italy interesting.

Hopefully Landon doesn't totally hang it up if he recovers physically. At 36 next WC round he can still make it most likely like Klose likely will for the Germans.

I think my starting lineup would be:

-------------Altidore---------------

----Bedoya---Dempsey---Zusi------

----------Bradley---Jones----------

-F.Johnson--Besler--Gonzo--Cameron-

-------------Howard----------------

Not totally certain about LB/RB, and I'd consider starting Johannsson up top if Jozy cannot round into form. That said, it's really hard to predict what Jurgen is thinking....I think I missed 4 guys in my 23 man prediction (Evans, Donovan, Goodson, Parkhurst over Yedlin, Brooks, Davis, Chandler).

LB/RB will be up to debate. IIRC Johnson has been playing RB primarily at Hoffenheim. And Beasley has been a LB fixture for the US. Cameron if he earns his spot starting though is basically a lock at RB as he is IIRC inexperienced at LB as he was primarily the RB for stoke this year and last year was a CDM and in the past was a CB.

I figure the roster locks are Dempsey, Bradley, Besler, Gonzo, and Howard. You can pencil them in at CF (or CAM depending on term), CM, CB, and GK respectively. Then you figure Zusi is a lock to play but will he be at RM or LM? Same thing with Fabian who's clearly the best US fullback just which side does he play? LB if Cameron wins or RB with Beasley. The other midfield spot is up for grabs, Bedoya being the most likely to get it. Jones is likely the starter at CM but he'll have some heavy competition with Beckerman and Cameron. Beckerman and Bradley paired up extremely well.
