Gas Prices

Is the alternative then to simply wait this out and expect the fossil fuel industry to do the right thing---

Crude has been low for months

Apparently the “right thing” is cut their margins so that we maximize our consumption of fossil fuels.

Which I’m told is the leading contributor to man made global warming.

The threat of which I’m told is imminent.

I’m still not understanding why Biden isn’t selling the public on the benefits of higher fossil fuel prices…

His policies are literally saving the planet!!! Why is he running from that victory?

Crude peaked over $120 per barrel on June 14. It hasn't been "low for months."

The spread between refined products and crude has widened out in part because refineries run on natural gas, which has become very expensive. But natural gas prices have also fallen sharply in the past two weeks. Between crude and natural gas falling so much, we'll have a different narrative pretty soon. Folks will have to go back to talking about CRT or maybe there will be some new shiny thang.

Yes, (D) will go back to telling us how we need drastic action on the imminent threat of climate change, hoping we forget that time the (D) POTUS called on Congress to enact a gas tax holiday and demanded to know why oil companies weren’t ramping up capacity. We’ll be expected to take their rhetoric seriously.

i mean, i don't see why you don't think both can be done

one should be done in the short term while working towards the long goal of future and getting off fossil fuels

i mean, its' not like we can just be done with it tomorrow

No doubt. If they really think climate change is such an existential issue, they should be doing summersaults over high gas prices. I suspect they are indeed looking at the polling. Personally, I think high gas prices are to be welcomed for all sorts of reasons. But I've also been in favor of ameliorating measures, such as offsetting tax rebates. High gas prices do have a regressive impact. It is a complicated issue with no easy bumper sticker solution. I wish I had something as pithy as Abolish the FDA to offer.

Because high prices are themselves the best driver of a transition to a substitute. If climate change is a imminent existential threat, taking action to curb that rise in price is antithetical to the cause.

I actually want you to keep reiterating this again and again because it’s actually dumbfounding how little of this is comprehended by team Biden.

yes, i think it can be a catalyst but it's not like we are setup and can do it overnight to transition to a new way cause some people have been fighting that from ever happening

WTI drops below $100 per barrel. Massive decline in wholesale gasoline prices.

Baker Hughes data show 750 domestic oil rigs in operation, up from 475 a year ago. Drill baby drill.

Eventually prices will fall, and many will forget about this until the next time it happens. The reality is there is little that can be done in teh short term, but a great deal in the long term.

As far as drilling, there are some things many don't understand. Not all oil is equally accessible. There is a lot where it is only profitable when prices are high. Sources like deep sea exploration and shale oil is far more expensive to extract than the oil in the middle east which sits right below the surface. When prices fall it really hurts the domestic oil industry in many places.

We do need alternative energy, preferably green energy. However it's not a switch you just flip. It takes time. There was a lot of interest in efficient cars this year, but if we have 2 dollar gas next year it will be business as usual until next time. Then everyone will be shocked, and act like it was totally unforseeable for oil prices to jump.

The impetus for the current drop isn't a great thing. It's far more about worry of a global recession decreasing demand.

One way to decrease gas prices in the short term is for businesses that have foolishly gone back to the office to return to remote work. Billions of gallons are wasted annually on unnecessary commutes.

One of Biden's dumbest and most hypocritical statements was his lobbying for businesses to go back to their offices in large cities. It not only increases energy prices, it also is bad for the environment.

Thank God you don't run my company. Working remote is trash. I like the company of fellow workers

It's also really good for commercial real estate owners, who are worth a lot of cash in the largest and bluest cities.

Best thing to happen to me in my adult life, outside of marriage and the birth of my kids, is the option to work remote.

Can’t wait till it’s the norm in my office as well. I kind of just stay home when I want but it’ll be something else when it’s full remote.

Different strokes, I guess. I'd prefer listening to Harris cackle all day than work remote
