Gausman claimed by the Reds per Passan

Surprised a guy better than Bumgarner got put on waivers, but thats baseball.

Best of luck to him, and hopefully Folty can get his head out of his ass now. If not, Anderson is on his ass.

This probably at least settles the Gausman/Julio debate for this winter at least.

I didn't see any breakdown of his pitches last game, but this could have been a situation where Gausman was being stubborn and not doing what he was asked so AA said screw it we'll save the cash and put him on waivers.

Fried has been fantastic this year. 3.48 xFip is really good.

All things considered, I think the Braves pitching staff has pitched to expectations, just not in the expected combination of pitchers.

Depends on the type of waiver they used - unconditional release, irrevocable outright or revocable. I'd guess the middle option so they could send him to AAA to continue working on things. Reds claimed hm tho so off he went

Only 1 kind of waivers exists now for guys like Gausman...the kind where he goes to the Reds if claimed. Revocable waivers went the way of the dodo bird.

Honestly it is amazing how good this team is considering how horrible the pitching has been compared to last year.
Folty from all star to optioned down
Gausman from 3/4 to waivers
None of the young non-soroka guys have stuck
Newk to the pen
Carle, winkler, and minter have been bad

Soroka Julio Jackson and Tomlin are our pitching bright spots?

Anderson May come up soon and start a playoff game

This is the whole point about maintaining a deep and flexible roster. The Braves would not be anywhere near this good if AA didn't chase value and flexibility as ardently as he did, and he should be commended by those of us who clamored for him to be more aggressive.

Dodgers-lite.

Would've preferred to see him at least get a few tries in the bullpen.

We had no choice. The only person left in the bullpen with options was Newk and AA said he wasn’t getting sent down. So in order to call up Folty for the start, someone needed to be put on waivers to try to sneak them to AAA.

The only real alternative was to let Folty keep working in AAA until September 1.

Should have just used Gausman as an opener.

But I don't think AA is confident in Snitker knowing how to optimally use an opener since he can barely optimally platoon.

I'm not surprised he's gone, one of the draws to trading for him was the flexibility of his contract. He pitched over his head for us last year and reverted hard this year.

It wasn't a bad gamble, we didn't give up any top prospects, and IIRC we only traded one prospect under 23 in the deal as well so it wasn't even like we traded high risk high ceiling kids who haven't figured it out.

The Braves have a lot of RHPs to choose from. Hopefully Folty will step up.

Zeets only comes around to be wrong these days

To be fair, the rule was only changed like 3 years ago. I thought the same thing last year. When you aren't playing meaningful baseball in Sept, you tend to not pat attention to rule changes.

There has been ways around this for years though. K-Rod coming up for the Angels in the playoffs years ago is an example of this.
