GDT 05/30/25 Red Sawx @ Bravos - Friday Night Shit Show

It absolutely speaks volumes. He’s speaking the same things the fans are.

If I knew firing Snitker would turn things around, I’d call for it in a heartbeat. But as I’ve said before, are the Braves going to be any better with Perez or Weiss in the interim? Or are they just an extension of Snit? How about this? If you let go of Snitker, how about a Mark DeRosa or David Ross in the interim? I know that may be a bit of a goofy idea, but this team needs a jolt. I’m not sure Eddie Perez or Walt Weiss can provide the jolt.

Regardless, there has to be a conversation. I appreciate all Brian Snitker has done for 40+ years in the Atlanta Braves organization, but it’s not hard to see how he has regressed with his managing.
Perez has been here forever so he would be the exact same. I feel like Weiss has a little more flare but not much so no thanks on him either. Has a team ever fired a coach mid season and brought somebody in from the outside?

I'm not so sure the guys on staff would be as bad. We've saw in the 2021 playoffs what happens when snit listens to the FO. This job doesn't require a genius... it requires common sense and not being a moron.

It is. He's laying the groundwork to the casuals on X that snit is a problem. He can't outright call snit what he is bc he needs access, but he's the only prominent guy pointing out some of Snit's idiocy
Teams are such pussies these days. I obviously don't consume the Atlanta news market, but it's the same up here in Minnesota. Coverage is all duckies and bunnies with no criticism. Terence Moore would sometimes go off on an ill-advised rant, but he laid it out there (of course, he and Furman Bisher covered the team during some dismal times), but neither Bowman nor O'Brien take well-timed snipes. It was only after the 2024 season that both labeled Kelenic as likely being a 4th OF so there is an occasional U-turn, but only after something becomes clear.

As for this instance, when guys throw in the upper-90s with that being their signature pitch with no other plus-pitches in their arsenal, elbow and shoulder injuries are usually just around the corner. Teams see these guys as bascially high-paid chattel so it's just "next man up." Snitker's shortcomings are becoming more obvious due to the team's struggles, making every decision (or non-decision) loom larger in scope. Whether he was snoozing in this episode doesn't matter that much to me. Smith-Shawver's arm was likely a ticking time bomb.

And I do start to wonder how much all the extensions have affected the production of these guys. Every single one of them is significantly worse, and most are still in their prime years. That is not normal. The only one who seems to consistently ball out is Ozuna, and he’s the one who usually seems the least secure contractually.

Been saying it for over a year - these extensions made them way too comfortable and lazy

It’s usually foolish to lay such accusations on professional athletes who wouldn’t be stars without a solid work ethic, but it’s hard to explain how every single player still in their prime is significantly worse now. These aren’t 33 year old declining stars, except Ozuna, who’s mostly been excellent.

If that’s the case, then the manager has to find a way to undo that. Bobby Cox was a “players manager”, but the guy played hard. Bobby though knew when someone needed some hard coaching. Remember when he yanked Andruw Jones right after he was lazy after a fly ball. Andruw never did that again. Brian Snitker is no Bobby Cox. He may have coached under Bobby, but he’s not half the manager he was. Snitker just seems like he’s checked out. That’s a reflection of the clubhouse.

While Snitker is not setting the tone, there needs to be a couple players at least who need to set a tone themselves. I know Chris Sale has been outspoken, but need more. This team is not this bad, but your record says what you are. There is still some time to turn it around, but we’re one day away from June. It’s no longer early in the season. Any turnaround has to happen pretty quickly. Or else………

The team may or may not be immediately better with Walt or Eddie managing, but starting the shakeup has value even if it doesn’t immediately solve all the problems.

Builds creative tension that lets people know that change is happening.

Firing Snit would put everybody on notice to do their jobs a little bit better. AA is safe for a couple more years. JS and Bobby had loaded teams through the 90's and early 00's and only had 1 WS to show for it so I think they have a longer leash some of us think. I know we are fans and get Irational some a lot more than others but no team makes the WS every year and when they don't they don't turn the whole organization over.

Olson's so streaky that he may prove me dreadfully wrong in the next month, but I always thought the he and to some extent Riley would have steep declining curves.

I don't think the extensions made these guys lazy, but I do think that the extensions have limited payroll flexibility and when a team is trying to stay below the next luxury tax threshold, you need payroll flexibility.

I think everyone fully understands Olson will almost certainly decline like a typical LHH power goon. It’s already happening.

Riley has always struck me as very similar to Uggla. Legit slugger who just suddenly lost the ability to make contact in his early 30s. Nothing to back that comp up other than a gut feeling.
