GDT: 07/20/2013: Braves at White Sox

Pitching 5 2/3 IP isn't deep dude. Pitching consistently into the 7th is pitching deep.

He left with an injury today (and most likely injured himself early in the game, which sucks that he tried to push through it), but it is what it is. Even counting the injury-shortened start, many teams would love to have a #4 who averages pitching into the six inning. As for Wood, there is a reason competing teams rarely throw a rookie into the rotation.

NL league average is 3.77 ERA.

There's no way Maholm should make the postseason roster. Trade him? Sure. Let him "eat" innings (to the extent his bad performance allows)? Why not, I doubt it kills us with our division standings. Use other guys and demote him to mopup duty? Works. DL him until September with soreness? That works too.

Any moves we make should be with an eye on the postseason roster. I do think the rotation and bullpen leave a bit to be desired in that context, and the offense is pretty much fixed in place. Is there enough flexibility and/or potential payoff to make a big splash for an ace? I kind of doubt it. Add a reliever or two, do anything with Maholm except continue to pretend he is an asset to the team, and call it a day, IMO.

As I said before, you need to look at some things in context more often. His whole season counts. Today. April. May. And on and on. You are acting like I am saying he is an Ace. I am not. I am saying he is a better option (when healthy) at #4 than Wood, at least this year. And he is easier on the bullpen than Beachy will be for a month or three (if we are lucky).

You cannot say this for fact! It's downright foolish to actually cause you DO NOT know!

Arrieta still has a lot of potential in the eyes of many. And he's more valuable than Northcraft, Hale, Terdo..anyone skid named.

Arrieta still has a lot of potential but right now he looks like he'll never live up to that potential. The Orioles gave him every chance to win a starting rotation spot and every year he pissed the bed. I mean we aren't talking 25-20 games. We're talking about 69 games, 63 starts worth of data.

69 G, 63 GS, 358 IP, 368 H, 228 R, 217 ER, 48 HR, 159 BB, 277 SO, 5.46 ERA

You don't think someone like Aaron Northcraft has as much value as Arrieta?

Yeah because contending teams usually have stacked rotations with no place for a rookie to start. The Braves rotation is anything but stacked at the moment.

The guy with a 76/35 k/bb in 90 innings at AA? No, I don't. Arrieta still has the stuff teams will bet on.
Oh and an ERA over 4.

And having a questionable rotation makes it a better decision to throw a rookie in there? People were calling for Hudson and Maholm to be replaced by Beachy and Wood. That is insane. Talk about a questionable rotation. Beachy for Maholm (if he goes on the DL or is traded), is fine with me. Wood for Maholm is most likely not a net gain for the year, and that is a bad thing for a competitive team with a 'questionable rotation'.

Sure but Northcraft isn't fetching Santana or Garza.

That's the point, skid named some prospects that could fetch either. It will cost a lot to get one of them.

Hell, Beachy is a 2-3 when healthy, roll with him.

Good question, esp. since Hale is on the 40-man roster already.

40-man roster is not an issue, there are three guys, O'Flaherty, Venters and Pena who can all be transferred to the 60-day. It wouldn't surprise to see Joe Beimel added so they could have another lefty. Beimel has been pitching well in Gwinnett.

Did you not see the way Alex Wood has dominated MLB hitters? 8 BB, 26 SO in 22 IP and only 16 H given up. He can't do better than a guy with an ERA of almost 4.50? Ok. I completely disagree.

I think he would put up a lower ERA. I would put him in there over Paul. But Wood probably won't average 6 innings/start.

Before today, Paul had below a 4. ERA. Today sucked. No doubt about it. And it is certainly possible that Wood will come up and dominate. But do you remember how bad Minor performed when he came up? What about how Teheran got slugged around? Even Beachy had issues pitching deep at the beginning. That is normal. It is not a risk you take with a competitive team if you do not have to. Now, it looks like we might, so I hope Wood does so well that Maholm never makes it back to the rotation. It just isn't likely.

Exactly. And that is a much bigger deal than people realize. Our bullpen, despite how well they have responded, has been devastated by injuries. The last thing we need is more innings from the bullpen.

Sprained left wrist is the diagnosis for Maholm. Just guessing here, but I would guess they would DL him and have either Wood or Beachy takes his next start.

Injury to Maholm is a sprained left wrist. Unusual injury for a pitcher. I'm glad it isn't his elbow.

Having 1 starter average less than 6 innings a start isn't going to kill the bullpen. Not when the Braves starting pitchers have pitched the 5th most innings in the majors this season. The bullpen is fine and will be even better once the Braves land another reliever like you know Frank Wren will do because he has done it every year he's been here.

IF Paul has to go on th DL, I'd prefer Beachy if he's ready of course.
