GDT 10/17/21: Braves vs Dodgers - NLCS Game 2

That play was amazing.

Just a fantastic slide.

The second one ozzie kinda hit Smiths glove and caused him to bobble it. Is there a rule against that? Like could you just go for the catchers glove and knock it outta the way?

I think it would fall under the rules around home plate collisions.

(1) A runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher, or otherwise initiate an avoidable collision. If, in the judgment of the umpire, a runner attempting to score initiates contact with the catcher in such a manner, the umpire shall declare the runner out (regardless of whether the catcher maintains possession of the ball). In such circumstances, the umpire shall call the ball dead, and all other base runners shall return to the last base touched at the time of the collision. If the runner slides into the plate in an appropriate manner, he shall not be adjudged to have violated Rule 6.01(i).

This article by Plaschke (certified idiot) is hilarious. We've been talking throughout the series about how well managed they are, and he rips them to shreds:

ATLANTA — The Dodgers lost their minds, then they lost the game.
There is no other way to explain it. There is no possible way to excuse it. There is no way around it.

Julio Urías? Instead of Blake Treinen or Kenley Jansen?

A starting pitcher in a high-leverage relief situation for the first time all year instead of two established veteran closers?

You’re really going to bring in Urías in the eighth inning with a two-run lead and the best back-end bullpen in baseball waiting to work?

Are you serious? Did this really happen? Are the Dodgers really that dumb?

Yes, yes, and, sigh, gulp, yes.

In an easily preventable late-night meltdown, the Dodgers outsmarted themselves, embarrassed themselves, and then eventually beat themselves Sunday in a 5-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series at Truist Park.

The Dodgers trail two games to none and they deserve it. They are on the verge of blowing their championship defense and it’s completely their fault.

An organization that considers its players to be interchangeable parts took this philosophy too far in the eighth inning and it burned them beyond belief.

Cant really argue with him there, bringing in Urias made no sense. Treinen only threw 9 pitches and could have easily went a 2nd inning. If not him, just go to Jansen for 6 outs. Or Knebel. Made no sense to go to Urias and now who knows how that hurts them in Game 4 with Urias scheduled to go.

Agreed - not sure why Roberts thought he was the best option, though I haven't looked at Urias' numbers versus the guys he was facing. Maybe they were all 0-fer against him. Using him in a spot he hasn't been used in all year just isn't smart. I guess they thought they had to use Scherzer in G5 against the Giants, but it cost them in G2 here as he couldn't even finish 5 innings, forcing them into another bullpen game after they did that in G1

No, you don’t understand. Ron Darling said it was a great move and Urias was the best pitcher since, maybe Koufax.

Urias has absolutely owned the braves. It didn't work out, but I don't think it was crazy

Do the Dodgers win the World Series last year without using Urias in relief? I certainly don’t think they come back against the Braves if they didn’t.

Typical Monday morning quarterback. Bill Clicksque is a quack

True, but the difference being that last year he started game 3 and then threw in relief four days later in a must win game 7.

This year they threw him out there in game 2 three days before a scheduled start in game 4.

You only make that move- which could potentially mess with his upcoming start- if you think he's substantially better than Knebel or than Treinen/Jansen going 2 innings. That doesn't make sense to me. Especially when you have a scheduled day off tomorrow, its not a must win, and you as a manager literally just heard from Scherzer that his arm was dead after you had him do the same thing you're now asking Urias to do.

Using him in relief of Game 7 last year made a whole lot more sense than this move.

I looked at Cot's again.

It has Duvall with a 2022 mutual option at $7 million with a $3 million buy out. So Duvall is going to cost us a net $4 million to keep on the roster next year? That's close to a lock, for us, right? Yet with the season he put together he has to think he's looking at more than a 1 year $7 million deal, right?

Peterson has a $10 million 2022 mutual option with a $2.5 million buy-out. He's probably not looking at a $10 million 1 year deal right now, right? If he takes the option do you keep him at a net $7.5 million cost to be your 4th OF and late game bat?

Well, is Urias on short rest better than Knebel or Trienen for 2 innings (only threw 9 pitches), Graterol wasnt exactly getting hit hard either. Urias also starts on Wednesday, and who knows how that hurts him then. There's a day off coming up as well, Dodgers had plenty of options to get through the game.

I'd take Joc for 7.5 mil for sure right now.

I question whether Joc or Duvall would uphold the mutual end of their options. Duvall has to be looking for a bigger contract. Pederson likely wants to play more than he could in Atlanta so he can rebuild his value.
