GDT 10/2/22: Braves vs Mutts - The Deciding Game

I’m in my mid 30’s so I don’t have vivid memories of the Ted Turner Braves. My relationship to the Braves and ownership is trading away Millwood to save money, low balling Andres Gallaragha after his incredible comeback season, watching Sheffield and Drew walk in back to back off seasons, etc. etc., so seeing this team spend money with the same ownership/McGuirk still feels surreal.

It shouldn’t make any sense, but I think the DeGrom smoke is real. He wants to play close to home, he’s friends with D’Arnaud, and of course there is the Chipper connection.

Unless ownership is about to go punch drunk I don't see how after the Morton signing that Degrom is still a possibility.

Can we do DeGrom, Dansby, and other pieces? We have more money than expected but i dont know if we can flirt with a 200-210 mil payroll.

I dont see how we go after DeGrom while keeping Charlie. If we let go of Charlie, yes, with him, i cant see that. AA always makes one crazy move, but i dont think it's gonna be DeGrom.

Really want Harris to hit another homer in the next 3 games to get to 20/20. Would be the 5th rookie to do it in his first season and 10th 21 years or younger to do it.

been on this wagon since July. He would be one of the fastest too... almost had a chance to tie Jrod in Seattle.. but has gone cold on the homer swing..

I hear what y’all are saying. It doesn’t seem like it would make sense. With that said, you can always make room at the top of the rotation (especially since the fifth spot is open). We also know that Alex is not shy about double and tripling down on a team strength (Kenley and Iglesias).

Given how much money Alex has been throwing around this year, literally nothing would surprise me.

I've been number one beating the drum that the move to Cobb would result in massive payroll increase. Is it possible we end up being the Dodgers?

The South is booming and Braves baseball is exciting as hell.

It’s all dependent on the new TV deal that we are poised to sign later this decade. If it ends up in the top 5, the Braves should be able to comfortably spend at the luxury tax level.

Please no. I dont want to be the big market team kept afloat because we can spend the most. Maybe when the PC police change the name to the Atlanta Cum Stains of whatever its going to be. The team will already be dead then. Then they can go full Yankee/Dodger outspend everyone strategy because I wont care then.

Dodgers don't just buy people. They have a great farm system and organization. They let some guys go on big free agent deals.

I am with you that I don't want to be the Yankees model of bringing in a bunch of free agents. I want to build with young guys. But it would be nice to not lose guys you love over 10 million dollars of a multibillion dollar company's money.

Dodgers buy some players (Bauer, Mookie, Freeman) but for the most, they're pretty prudent. They dont just go out and sign a bunch of players to massive deals. They've let players go (Seager, Machado, Greinke, Jansen to name a few). If we have a big payroll, i hope it's to keep the core together.

We basically sell out every game. I have to think dealing out the Morton option is equally a sign that payroll expectation is going to be very high.

Even with the Morton deal I have the payroll at about $174M with the only real hole at SS. The 2023 CBT threshold is $233M. There's weird math that goes on there that we've never had to worry about, but I imagine the Braves can have an opening day payroll of ~$220M and stay under that cap. I see no reason to expect the payroll to be significantly under the CBT cap due to the revenues the team is seeing.

So that's something like $45M to spend for 2023. I doubt AA is getting DeGrom and Swanson for that. DeGrom alone will almost certainly be $43M+.

With the added revenue over the past year or so, the Braves can expect to have a higher payroll. But don't forget that their TV deal calls for significantly higher revenue starting in 2023.

Right now they get around $80m, that will go over $100m next season, and up to $120 by 2027.

I wish we could get someone to replace Rosario but probably gotta bite the bullet there. Maybe a bullpen piece to replace Jansen but Dansby is the big move this offseason.

I’d still attach Anderson to Ozuna to move the contract. If we could somehow make that happen then Swanson and Diaz would be possible. I doubt we get another starter but AA will get another legit bullpen arm. I expect Grissom to either bring back a legit LF’er in trade or be made one himself in the offseason.

I dont see it going after Diaz, and i doubt we'd outbid the Mets.
