GDT 10/9: MAX and the USUAL LINEUP- GET TIED ON OUR MASCOT HOLIDAY!

I'm an admitted Aaron Nola fanboy - I've always loved the guy for whatever reason - so I watch many of his starts and this is accurate. He's not the same guy at all. His peripherals are better than what you see on paper, but his knuckle curve is his only real pitch now. His fastball is essentially average but it's easier to pick up than ever, his sinker and changeup are flat-out not effective, and his cutter (which he rarely throws) is OK but again, he doesn't trust it. Additionally, his command has gotten worse and his hard-hit trade has also risen. He's definitely someone who can turn it on, but he's not consistent at all.

Thank you for sharing your insight on this-
I haven’t watched Nola all year- other than in highlights on MLB and such - except for games against us.

What I’m hearing you say is that we can start Elder or the rookie and give up 8 runs and still win via shelling Nola for a dozen…..😀

I honestly have low confidence in all options. I suppose the only bright side of going AJSS is its a long postseason, and maybe by virtue of discovery, he becomes a weapon for us, whereas even if Elder or Tonkin deliver, I have zero confidence in them as recurring options for us throughout the playoffs. I'd have more confidence in AJSS if it wasn't for his walks and homers. Both have been a major issue.

Elder had 13 starts in the second half, 6 were good and 7 were bad - and of the 7 bad, they were REALLY bad. I'd probably lean AJSS but with a ridiculously short leash if he just doesn't have control or poise. and as I think about it, I'm more concerned about the game getting away early, so would consider having one of our pen aces available for extended early relief.

My dad is on vacation in Slovenia right now, and he texted me out of the blue this morning with, "So the Braves apparently turned the greatest double play ever yesterday?" Apparently he was at a bus stop and met a Phillies fan who was still fuming about the result.

Potentially what is good about AJSS is that the Phillies have never seen him. And presumably you would have throwing near max effort since you only plan to have throw about 3-4 innings max. The downside is AJSS hasn't really shown he can locate all that well and pitching max effort probably exacerbates the issue.

And that's my concern..the moment..the crowd...It will cause him to just throw instead of pitch...Getting behind early is the worst case scenario for us...we need get ahead early and put the pressure on Philly

One thing I don't get, with days off all over the place, why the Braves just didn't throw Hand as an opener in Game 1, Game 3, Game 4... Clear the tough Lefties the first time through and let your bulk guy only have to face them at most 2 times.

The only problem with that is burning him in every game and not being able to bring him in in a high leverage spot later in the game.

In all the excitement of the ending I think the job the pen did is getting overlooked. Max didn't do them any favors and they held the Phillies largely in check.

People freaking out because Morton was procedurally activated off the IL. Doing a phantom injury and activating him tomorrow just screams bad karma.
