GDT 11/2/21: Braves @ Astros - World Series Game 6

I found a form to fill out to request the special edition version which apparently includes today's front page. Sadly, I've lost the URL for it and can't get back to it.

They drastically overestimated the demand for women's world series shirts. Academy didn't have any unisex shirts of any size but had about 400 women's shirts.

If you are using the same metric to look at two players that play the same position, the positional preference you are concerned about should drop out.

(a) My main point was that that you were using dWAR to say Blauser was an above replacement defensive shortstop, and that is not what it means. The mythical "replacement" SS is league average on D, which Blauser assuredly was not. 0 dWAR ≠ replacement level defense.

(b) And it's not necessarily true that the position preference would drop out. This is actually a great example of why dWAR isn't the metric you should use to compare defensive quality. Imagine two league average defensive SS, one who plays 800 games and one plays 1600. Both would be both be +0 in terms of Runs Saved, thus accurately telling us they have both been average defenders for many seasons. But the 1600 game guy would have about twice as much dWAR because it includes positional credit for games played. Even within a single season you can see problems like this that make it a bad idea to use dWAR this way.

(c) Also, dWAR is gonna pick up games played at every position, and Blauser played a non-neglible amount of 2B and 3B.

Basically, if you wanna compare their defensive metrics at SS just compare their defensive metrics at SS.

Blauser had a 5 of 6 season run where his defense using the dWAR metric was on par with Dansby's defense. If they are both below average for shortstops, it doesn't alter the similarity of the metric's view of their defense.

They are not both below average SS. You are breaking things up in a really fine way that doesn't work well with defensive numbers, which typically require a large multi-year sample (compounded by the misuse of dWAR). Just look at their runs saved at short. As a general spectrum, over a number of years:

+15-20 a year = super elite (Andrelton)
+10 = elite/well above average (Carlos Correa/Trevor Story)
+5 = above average
+0 = average
-5 = below average
-10-15 = should be moved off the position (Jeter)

As a Brave, Blauser was at -39 runs at SS, averaging about -6 runs per 1200 IP. Swanson is +10 averaging about +2 per 1200 IP. That's an 8 run swing, almost a full win per year; it's a big difference. The difference between Blauser and Dansby is basically the difference between Dansby and an elite defender.

I will grant Blauser probably improved over the years, but he also had a lot of room to do so.

Still in disbelief and it hasn't quite sunk in yet. Never expected this in a million years. But this championship certainly feels like a make up for all of the heartbreaks we've had in the past few decades. I'm going to enjoy this for a very long time. What a ride!

It really hasn't hit me yet. I went into Game 6 fully ready for there to be a Game 7 and thinking the Astros would probably win it all. They were in the driver's seat and surely their offense would come alive in front of their fans. But the way the Braves completely dominated the game, and whole series, is like a dream. And they dominated the Dodgers, too. Even with Acuna and Soroka out and Charlie going down, they still looked like the best team on the field in every game.

This was a performance for the ages by the Atlanta Braves. Snit's old dude coaching staff, especially the pitching dept., had the boys ready for what they were facing and shut the best teams down. Alex's moves were brilliant but you can't discount the great team atmosphere and chemistry that the new guys were able to come into. That also led to them having success. Hard to wrap my head around how the whole organization orchestrated the perfect storm of peak performance.

Gonna celebrate tonight, nice and slow and watch the game a 3rd time. Champagne is in the fridge and this time I splurged for the good stuff.

Likely. And you're right. Unisex would have been better. My wife even preferred the unisex.

I think about 70% of the women in the world prefer unisex when it comes to this thing. Honestly even like the super hotties I know buy unisex and tie them off instead of wearing women's sports shirts.
