They lost house seats.
They gained 0 state legislatures
They failed to take majority in senate.
These were all priced in as certainties.
Trump was supposed to have a landslide loss of epic proportions. Instead the race is so close that we won't know a projected winner til 4 days after. Trump also increased his vote total by 5 million votes.
Everything in life is about expectations. And the Dems lost badly against those.

I don't think they will. They'll clean up in two years during the mid-term (sitting Presidents lose in the mid-term). Probably end up with control of the House and Senate.
I'm not sure how relevant a 78 year old Trump will be in 4 years.
