GDT #13, 4/14/'14: Braves (Santana) vs Philthies (Hernandez); Still no CJ

So its pretty funny to look at some full season projections at this point.

Gattis is projected to hit 37 homers with 0 walks and 100 strikeouts.

That might be the funniest line in the history of baseball!

Poor Schoenfield. The funny thing about this was that in the postgame, Uggla was basically admitting that he was overmatched by Diekmann's fastball, but that he got a slider to hit.

Pitchers can be so dumb at times. Uggla cannot hit a good fastball. A lot of guys his age turn into slider bat speed guys. So what does a LEFTY throwing 97 do?

That guy had to throw his slider. He didn't have a chance locating his fastball for a strike.

Some facts to the 4 consecutive homers discussion:

It only happened 7 times, the last time was 2010 when Arizona hits 4 vs. Milwaukee.

After the Red Sox vs. Yankee game, the White Sox did it also one year later.

Didn't the Braves lead off a game with 4 consecutive homers before?

If you walk Uggla sobeit, better than lobbing a slider in there for a grand slam. With Simmons and Pena on deck, both are prone to swinging at bad pitches.

I don't think anyone wants to walk the tying run in. I just don't think he had any clue what he was doing out there and just wanted to get ahead. Obviously in hindsight it was an awful decision. But I just don't think he had any choices. Simmons has been swinging a hot bat as of late so its not like you would rather face him than Uggla.

I think you're remembering the game of 28 May 2003, at the beginning of which the Braves hit three consecutive home runs—though that opening frame did include a fourth (non-consecutive) long-ball:

Rafael Furcal, Mark DeRosa and Gary Sheffield began the game with back-to-back-to-back homers against Jeff Austin. Before the inning was done, Javy Lopez hit a two-run homer to knock out the Reds starter.

That kid could only throw his slide ball for a strike. He could not command his fastball at all. Pretty cut and dry decision when you think about it.

Let's see. Hale is pitching tomorrow so run support is going to vary.

Well.

It looks like weather is bad tonight.

And we're facing Lee, a top 5-10 pitcher in baseball.

If they get it in, will be quite tough to win.

Hale in CBP

Kind of meh on the rainout tonight possibly.

On one hand it'd give our pitchers a day of rest, on the other it means Fredi might make them work twice tomorrow.

Walk Uggla and face Simmons who is hitting very well as of late?

As the go-ahead run with the BASES LOADED.

It was a bad pitch, hindsight is always 20-20 though.
