I think Smyly is going to end up more good than bad, and I think the rotation definitely needed the depth he gives. I have no qualms about the Smyly signing—the biggest quibble is maybe he could been had for $1-2m less.

On the other hand, I think you should pretty much never pay more than $10m per annum for a reliever, so for me that deal was always a stinker, irrespective of how well Smith performed (and, unfortunately, he has not really performed well).

Smyly will be good. But it can be argued that we already had enough depth in the rotation, and his $11m could’ve been used to shore up other areas of the team.

I can definitely be argued. I just don't agree with that argument, given what else was seemingly available in that price-range. But it can definitely be argued—especially in light of Ynoa's first two appearances.
 
Love hearing Glavine say he's missed seeing "this aspect of the NL game" right before Inciarte lays down two horrible, popped-up attempts at a bunt.
