What an awful start to the season. But perhaps this is what happens when you...
--Let three of your most reliable relievers walk without adding anyone to replace them on what was clearly your biggest strength last year
--Whif on the one free agent reliever we decided to invest serious money into, who has turned out to be a total bust thus far. Let's just remember we are paying Will Smith 3 years and 40mm to be a league average reliver
--Sign an unproven journeyman starter to one of the highest contracts in free agency without seeing how the market shapes out. Go figure he's been mediocre and injury prone - as he had for the first literally DECADE of his career
--Let your best bench / 9th starter walk, don't replace him and rely on an awful bench now in a league with no DH
--Bet on a rookie that was unanimously expected to struggle offensively. Is it really surprising that Pache has struggled?
--Not add a single bat when its very clear that you've got two massive line-up gaps plus the pitcher. At least have flexibility to have even one decent platoon bat off the bench. Having a Matt Joyce level where on some days we could put Acuna in Center seems like a necessity when you have a rookie center fielder that can't hit
--and yes some bad luck on injuries with Fried, Soroka, etc.
