GDT 4/28/21: Cubs vs Braves - Ynoa keeps it going

If where you hit in the line up makes you a better hitter then shouldn’t we move all struggling players to that spot.

I was chatting a casual fan two nights ago and after the Acuna bomb he said they are wasting him in the lead off spot. It brought a tear to my eye that even a causal fan sees this. Of course he incorrectly said he should be hitting clean up. But still. He did recognize Acuna leading off is making his power less productive.

But right now I don’t see a better lead off option so it is probably a non issue at the moment.

Braves are rocking the 4th best WOBA in baseball with a 272 BABIP (21st in baseball)

I think the issue so far with peoples perception is that they don't realize how god awful offense has been around the league so far this year.

The real issue so far in the season has been their starting pitching. They currently have the 22nd best FIP in baseball as a group. And that's after two outstanding performances the last two nights.

The Braves relievers have a 3.70 FIP which is 7th best. The Braves need some RHP help down there but they haven't been horrible.

Hopefully Fried, and eventually Soroka, can round this rotation out.

A group of Fried, Soroka, Anderson, Morton, Ynoa could be pretty good. I'd then move Smyly to the multi-inning reliever role to bolster the pen. But that likely won't happen until after the ASB if everything works out.

I think Ynoa is the one who will end up in the relief role. We need RHRP and we can’t have Ynoa starting the whole year.

And now the narrative on Riley will shift 180 degrees after a few good games.

He seems to be building on something in terms of greater selectivity, but it's early and other teams will adjust their approach and Riley will have to counter. If he can to that, he may be turning a corner, but it's really too soon to tell.

If he continues to pitch as he has been, I think he stays put in the rotation in the 5th spot.

Wilson could be good out of the pen.

It’s not that there’s a performance issue but it would be a major innings jump for Ynoa to have him start all year. Everyone is going to have their innings managed somehow this year.

By the time all of Morton, Soroka, Fried, Smyly, Ynoa and Anderson are all miraculously ready to pitch, one of them will be due to hit the DL.

Which is why the Braves are looking at a guy like Aníbal Sánchez. And why I can't fault Anthopoulos for the $11m dropped on Smyly.

I can still fault him for that move. He didn't need to give Smyly that much cash so early based on a handful of good innings in 2020. He was a huge injury risk, and the "upside" was based on a tiny sample in the most pitcher-friendly ballpark in the game.

The only defense I can come up with for that move is AA thought he had a larger budget when he made the signing, and it was later reduced so he couldn't afford to make other additions to round out the roster.

AA is a very smart man. This is the only thing that makes any sense.

Going to full capacity next week could increase budget at deadline, perhaps

I don’t think projecting what a five man rotation for the Braves would look like is productive. I think moving guys in and out of the rotation will continue all year. Part of it will be health related, but some will also be load management.

Any word on touki? I think we need Touki and Wilson in the pen.

I think they need to let Webb pitch. I think he's good.

I know William Woods is 22, not on the 40 man and hasn't pitched over A ball. But I think he could be a thing for us if he shows well in the minors. Could also be the guy we trade at the deadline to get a RH RP who is performing well.

He went on the 60 day IL just before the start of the season so my guess is mid'July at the earliest
