GDT 4/4/23: Braves @ Cards - Max defense for Dodd

So it looks like Dodd is our horse to carry us to another ROY.. I don't see Shew coming up and doing anything. maybe Forrest Wall comes up and becomes our everyday LF and produces 4 wins in half a year like Money Mike.. prove me wrong.

Don't sleep on Justin Dean. Super quick guy with a career .360 OBP in the minors. Could be a 30-40 steal guy with the new larger bases. Can also play every position. I hope he gets his shot this year.

I have him on my radar, but I think he doesn't get a crack this year.

I'm digging how the pen is being used so far. It's almost like lines in Hockey - 1st line and 2nd line. Keeping guys fresh AND winning at the same time.

Interesting...I guess it depends where you're coming from. Being from Germany, it is pretty much universally accepted that English is far easier to learn than other common languages like French, Italian, Spanish. German itself is really complex. We have like 6 different use cases for a simple word like "the". It must be a pain in the rear to learn that.

That’s because English is a Germanic language, so of course you’d find it easier to learn than one of the Romantic languages that are derived from Latin.

Edit: I see some have beaten me to it.

Pasting this here as a direct comp to Shuster:

Shuster's FA was 90.6 mph with 8.0" of rise. That's poor velocity with below average movement. Needless to say, that isn't going to cut it as an MLB SP without elite control or superb breaking stuff, not even a #5.

The SL was 82.9 mph with 2.0" of horizontal break and 0.6" of "rise". That's below average velocity, close to average horizontal movement, and above average vertical movement. This is a decently average-ish pitch.

The CH had a 10 mph delta from the FA, with 4.7" of fade and 5.2" of "rise". The velo delta is plus, but the movement well below average side to side, and average vertically. If this is his premiere pitch, I don't see how.

All in all this looks to be a very mediocre arsenal. He's basically a LH version of Ian Anderson minus 2 grades on the FA. Without absolute pinpoint command of the FA, I don't see how Shuster is anything more than a fill in SP who will be looking to catch onto non-contenders within the next 5 years.

Dodd's FA was 92.4 with 8.3" of rise. Not a great pitch, but a full grade or more above Shuster's.

The SL was 83.0 with 0.7" of break in the wrong direction, meaning according to the data it doesn't even break to the glove side. Perhaps it will play up due to his FA moving 5.6" armside.

The CH had a decent velo delta of almost 8 mph, and 5.9" of armside fade. This is better than Shuster's, and it's a shame he only threw it 6 times.

So it seems to me Dodd and Shuster are very similar. Dodd throws harder, while Shuster has a better breaking ball. As usual, their control will dictate if they are a backend guy or a AAAA guy.

Or what about. Grissom/elder or Shuster/Ozuna/cash. For Reynolds.

Cruz/bae/Grissom would be a young exciting up the middle core for the Pirates.

Prove me wrong.

Reynolds is a perfect fit here and AA has tried getting him the past 2 years. If Grissom isn’t gonna be the SS here then I’d use him as the centerpiece if the Pirates would do it. Grissom has a ton of value.

I'd do it for Reynolds, not sure what else we would have to throw in. Probably some of our excess pitching depth ie Elder, Dodd, Schuster, Richie, Murphy, Anderson etc. Dont really have alot of extra position player depth at all lol.

(That's probably nowhere near enough before someone thinks i think it is lol).

Grissom, Shuster, and 2 other pieces no doubt. Not sure what they’d be but Reynolds isn’t staying in Pittsburg and the longer they keep him the less they’ll get. But like I said he’d be a perfect fit here and AA has a boner for him. And we know how AA gets when he locks in on a player he wants.

Man, it would still be just such a dream to get Reynolds in LF... what a ridiculous team that would be at that point. Arcia at SS would be fine all day long at that point. Although Arcia is gonna be a star anyways, imarite??

Just a couple days ago it was reported they were close again on an extension so I wouldn't say he "isn't staying in Pitt"

Grissom and Shuster would be pretty close when looking at just projected value. 5+ years of Grissom at 2B giving you 2-4 wins versus 2.5 years of Bryan giving you 4-6 wins is almost a wash when you look at money owed in conjuction. But you have to pay the superstar premium and would Shuster be enough.. Pitt could use some high floor low ceiling type pitching.. I don't see this happening, but it is fun to dream on having Reynolds in this lineup.

He wants an opt out somewhere in the deal, which is the holdup. AA doesnt do opt outs in contracts, so not sure that works for us either. Lineup with Reynolds would be literally unfair.

He wants an opt out in Pitts bc if it doesn’t turn around then he wants to be able to get out.
