GDT #42: 5/18/14: Braves (Floyd) vs Cardinals (Garcia '14 debut)

So you don't claim that Uggla makes the team win, but you do think that him playing does not increase the chances of the opponent winning. Or am I misunderstanding.

You are misunderstanding.

I don't think Uggla makes this team win. But we don't have anyone to replace him that is any better, or arguably, that isn't worse. So, imo, playing him instead of Pastor or Pena does not increase the chances of the opponent winning.

Pastor can play a passable 2B. Uggla is an error away from a big inning.

Listened to this one on the radio in the car mostly. Few thoughts.

1. I was prepared to rip into the team for another disgraceful (this time, defense) performance, but a great job of them getting off the deck in the ninth. Hopefully it's a spark plug, but this team owes us about a month of great play. So I'll believe we've turned the corner when I see it.

2. Haven't seen the questionable pitch to Schafer, but I will continue to say it. The St. Louis Cardinals have no right to complain about any call ever again. The last three years at least, they have gotten the benefit of every call.

3. Gerald Laird absolutely can not catch any more games for us. He almost single-handily cost us the game with his bull****. He has got to go. I know Bethancourt can't hit that well, but at least we would have a competent backup, when Gattis needs a day off. If Laird keeps being allowed to play every fifth day, Fredi is an imbecile.

4. I like Don Sutton's analysis, but he is a completely brutal play-by-play man on the radio. It takes him FOREVER to get out of his mouth what happens on a play, and that's only part of it.

I was about to really tear into Fredi for playing Laird, Uggla and Schafer when we really needed a win, but Schafer played a huge part in the comeback. Regardless, Uggla doesn't need to step on the field for this team again. Play Pastor or call up Tommy.

Overall, pleased with the win, and I hope this gets us going.

Borderline, but not a heinous call. Matheny's gets bad karma payback for intentionally walking Gattis.

It was nice to see some crooked numbers ("crooked numbers" is 2014's "tip your cap," i.e. the most vomit-inducing postgame phrase) and really encouraging to see a comeback win.

I liked the way Gavin Floyd matter-of-factly drilled Garcia. It put some starch in the team, I think.

Laird is brutal. No catch, no hit, provides veteran leadership, eats a lot.

I wouldn't necessarily have walked the bases loaded with a guy who's struggling with his control. Still, I could hardly fault Matheny for wanting to pitch to Jordan Schafer. I was definitely hoping that Jordan would, er, take four and pass. Schafer isn't that good, but at least he had the sense to make Rosenthal throw two strikes. It was a smart AB, and the kind we need to see more of.

I hold my breath whenever Uggla has to make a throw. So does he, I think.

This is kinda how I imagine Gerald's veteran leadership, in practice:

Hard to believe this lineup is this bad for this long. Not to pile on, but this pace would be difficult to keep up for an entire season unless we are in fact cursed.

Have you considered the possibility that Laird is making sure this team does not peak too early?

Don't let the bad drive out the good.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
