GDT 5-11-16: Braves vs. Phillies

I was looking at average fastball velocity for Kimbrel and Viz this year, Kimbrel's is 97.89 (close to 98 mph, very good as usual). Viz is at 98.19 mph (just a bit better). Good to see Viz not losing any velocity this year.

Also of note is that Bethancourt has 3 homers this year

His OPS was .760 coming in with two homers, I guess it went up with another. But hey he sucks they assured us of that. Remember, if AJP couldn't help him no one can hahaha.

I see he's 2-3 with his third homer tonight, looks like calling a great game too as it's 1-0 Padres in 8th with two outs.

2 PBs in only 8 games (62 innings) and hasn't thrown out anyone trying to steal yet this season. Sheesh. You guys will find just about anything to complain about.

So you're saying he should win the gold glove if compared to AJP eh? Anyway, while you clearly disagree some of us questioned how Bethancourt was handled in the past too.

What does AJ have to do with this? Bethancourt needed a change of scenery and had to realize how to approach the game as a professional. Pretty much all the scouting reports on him was he wasn't putting in the work necessary to be a consistent major league player. Seeing he's caddying for a guy with a .520 OPS in San Diego, it doesn't appear he's turned the corner regardless of how he does in spot action. Let's see what happens this week. Padres claimed Hector Sanchez from the White Sox and he's out of options.

AJP was supposed to be his mentor if you don't recall. Plus they talk like he can catch when he's far worse than Bethancourt ever was, therefore my joke. Also, what does Norris poor start have to do with it? Norris was going to start there with or without Bethancourt being picked up unless traded first. And according to reports there have been numerous trade talks with other teams and the Padres over Norris going back to this off-season. Nothing panned out and with his struggles at the plate that hardly makes moving him easier if you want a good return. So who knows what they'll do with him now. Regardless, Bethancourt will probably get more starts now with his strong start and Norris continuing to struggle.

Don't look now, but Freddie Freeman is up to a .289/.391/.500 slash line with 6 home runs.

There is reason to believe that he is being comforted by his right wrist.

On pace for over 30 home runs (for those who think that power is YUGE).

Perhaps we should trade him.

I was only mildly concerned with his slow start, because he's always been streaky. I'll take a .891 OPS any day. Love to see seven more in the lineup. Of course, it would ruin our 2017 draft status.

My only concern was with his health. I see no reason Freddie shouldn't be a .300/.400/.500 player with 30 HRs a year.

What did Bethancourt do in Atlanta that proved that he deserved playing time? I saw a guy that struggled in all aspects of being a catcher that couldn't swing the bat. Sure, I guess you could say Fredi should have played him everyday, but if he's not working hard (by all accounts), then you can't reward that.

Hopefully, Christian can figure it out and have a great career in San Diego. He had his chances here and he was awful and wasn't putting in the work to actually become better. At some point, you need to move on.
