GDT 5/25/21: Braves @ Sawx - Snits Blows the Lineup

Anyone know about how long an injury like this takes?

Dislocations tend to be less serious than separations. I think a lot would depend on whether there has been ligament damage. It clearly isn't a "tape it up and go" like it would be for most NFL players, but here's hoping he can make it back soon.

I had the same injury in college, not from sliding but a collision at home plate (I was a catcher). As long as there is no ligament damage it becomes a pain tolerance issue. It will be quite sore for a week or so but I was able to play about a week later. Mainly because it was my throwing hand. If he can grip the bat he may only miss a few days.

Completely different argument. Sure there is a risk reward debate. But there is equipment out there that protects the hands while running the bases that reduce that risk. I am sure the team would even pay for it if that player wanted it.

But I can definitely see why guys go in head first. Even last night watching the replay, Ozuna was trying the swim move to avoid the tag. That just can’t be done going feet first.

I guess my point is that going for the extra base in a way that requires sliding hands first isn’t worth it. A 50/50 play for an extra base that risks all the hand/wrist injuries that derail entire seasons for a player doesn’t balance out.

Slide feet first. Protect the hands/wrists. If that means they get grown out 2-3 extra times per season, or don’t attempt a few close plays, fine. No reasonable amount of missed extra bases makes up for losing a key player for days/weeks/months.

I don't know what the heck to do, but I don't think we can go with Heredia LF/Inciarte CF for six weeks.

There are other options:

1) Arcia (presumably at third with Riley moving the the outfield)

2) Waters

3) PANDA at third/Riley to left

I'm guessing we'll see a bit of all of the above.

The only one that seems doable to me is Arcia with Riley to LF, but I don't think they played Riley in the outfield even during the spring. I wonder if they'd shy away from that since he seems to be hitting well while only playing one position.

Call up Drew or Michael and hope they can pound dingers until the league gets a book on them.... or make a massive trade- which is what we should do. Window is open. We have massive capital. Go get Mitchell Haniger.

This is a pretty big injury. Can't count on Riley staying at the level he's been. Gonna have to have Acuna and FF go rendon and soto 2019.

If the plan was to add in the OF at the deadline, then it may as well happen now.

Folks who think Arcia or Waters is going to be the answer will be in for a rude awakening if that’s what happens.

Oh yeah, forgot to add....

No amount of extra bases gained by Ozuna sliding hands first even comes close to making up for losing him 6 weeks. It is always a bad idea.
