GDT 6/17/19: Mets come to town

A massive payroll is a big advantage for a smart front office, but I don't really think its the advantage that it used to be for some of the dumber ones. If I had to choose between a team with a massive payroll and a team that was great at amateur signing/drafting, player development, trading, and relentlessly pursuing value, then I would choose the latter every time.

I think teams like the Phillies have made some major missteps with their stupid money and its gonna prevent them from having the extensive window that I see us having. Outside of a few teams like the Dodgers and Yankees, I don't think there are many teams in a better position for the future than us, the Rays, and maybe the Padres.

I think its more of an advantage now because the big market teams aren't as incompetent as they used to be.

But since it's not an advantage I think Baseball should institute a salary cap and give the Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox half the salary cap of other teams. Since it's not an unfair advantage.

Anything can happen with pitching of course but I'm just not sure how you can project out any season for the next 5 without the Braves being 90+ wins.

There is just so much stupid young talent which provides so much financial flexibility to round out the roster with good players.

I dont want a 200 mil payroll, because then AA could make some stupid decisions.

I'd hope to be around the 160 mark. But i'm also not sure what moves he is gonna do unless he keeps trying to lock up some of our young talent this winter like Swanson, Riley, maybe Soroka. I could lowkey see him go after a veteran rotation piece on a 3 year deal. With Pache/Waters on the way, not sure what he does with the outfield.

I can't remember a better stretch of offense from a Braves team. 82 runs in their last 9 games, 124 this month, in 16 games. It's craziness! Literally everyone in the lineup is on a hot streak at the same time.

I'm not sure how the offense will stack up over the course of the year, but there definitely is no hole in the lineup right now.

beware, tho: this how is how people were saying the Phillies looked the first few weeks of the season. sometimes everyone is hitting or sequencing is super lucky at the same time.

i think the Braves legitimately have a better, deeper offense than Philly. but still wise to be cautiously optimistic, overall.

their problem was paying 300 million to bruce hooper. The Braves have 5 players with the same or better fWAR than him. And that number goes to 9 when looking at bWAR.

Braves lineup is alot more balanced than theirs is.

They had a good top 5 with Cutch, Segura, Harper, JTR and Hoskins. And JTR has to rest because he's a catcher, and now Cutch is gone. Bruce magic will cool off.

Our worse hitters are Nick, Riley, and Flowers/Mac, everyone is a threat in the lineup. You have some guys you can pitch around and get to in the Phillies lineup.

Weak division and a strong line up right now are good things for the Braves. Once again the Phillies are looking like 2
pump chumps and the Nationals are a complete joke. Braves should take advantage of this and have a double digit lead before the trade deadline.

that would be bad for attendance
