GDT 6/28/23: Braves @ Twinkies - Powerful Ass Lineup for Allard

Kudos to the front office for being calm enough to see if the players they had might return to form.

Braves have really had most things go their way during this run other than injuries, arguably.

The fact we are where we are without our ace and MLBs only 20 game winner from last season taking up 2/5ths of the rotation is crazy. Had we not had Shuster/Dodd/Soroka/Allard/Johnny Wholestaff taking up those starts most of the season, we'd probably be 4 or 5 wins better.

When Kolby Allard is giving you scoreless starts you just have to laugh.

what a good scheduling break for the Braves. To have an off day at home before a big home series with the closest division victim. Once we curb stomp them, we will have put every in the east on notice that taking the division from the Braves will not be an easy task.

And I am trying to figure out who is pitching Friday.. I just don't see them wanting to do another BP game with Chavez still out.. Bring Soroka up, then you have to send Allard down I guess, but you are burning options.. I can't remember how many you have in a year now, but just got to be careful not to paint yourself in a corner yo yo'ing guys.

Can’t you option a guy as many times as you want throughout the year if he has options?

“Only one Minor League option is used per season, regardless of how many times a player is optioned to and from the Minors over the course of a given season. (Players may only be optioned five times per season; after that, it requires outright assignment waivers to assign the player to the Minor Leagues.)“

How is this not contradictory?

I don't think this is right. new rules say you can only option guys a certain number per year.
Good catch. Didn’t know this had been changed.

I’m a little less worried about Soroka burning those options than I would be Shuster. Shuster seems destined to live his professional life on that shuttle.

We definitely need a starter who can take the ball every five days and take some pressure off the AAA shuttle pitchers. AA should also be looking at a long term solution at SP but not sure we have the pieces for that mid-season.

His name is Max Fried

I really don't think we do

It would be a nice luxury to be able to move a prospect for a star rental similar to what the Dodgers did with Machado, Scherzer, etc. but it’s definitely not a “need”, nor do we have the prospect depth for that to make sense.

Once Fried and even Wright are back, we have them/Shuster/Elder/AJS/Strider/Morton/Soroka/Allard, even Dodd. I mean we can improve on some of the depth guys, but it's not a huge need really. More legit BP depth i can see, as well as bench help. SP i think we're fine.

yeah, unless we get a legit difference maker for the playoffs, a starter is not needed to make it there or even win the division. I would rather see a legit utility guy (if even available) or a high leverage pen piece.

And Slippy coming out swinging the last 2 days.. man.

Honestly, we saw last year what can happen down the stretch. Stider was injured and was unable to go in the playoffs. Moton is not the same guy as 2021. Regarding Fried, i'd be worried that forearm strain is a ticking bomb. Wright was shut down in spring training, ramped up to start a few games, then shut down again. You can't count on him to be a main contributor.....Elder has been the most consistent starter to date. If you can get an impact arm, you do it. Guys like Shuster/AJS/Soroka/Allard/Dodd can be shifted to the pen after Gwinnetts season ends if need be. That would be my argument if you can get an impact arm.

If the cost is too high, then i'm definitely looking for at least 1 impact reliver if not 2.

I tend to agree with you. Strider, Elder, and Morton are the only consistent starters right now. We’ve done well without Fried and Wright and neither are guaranteed to stay healthy the rest of the year. The other guys can shift to the bullpen to help out. If Giolito and a reliever is obtainable for Grissom then I’d be all over it.
