GDT 6/8: Strider, Brooms, and a Shovel of Dirt: Throw it Again

I'm not sure if this is the wine talking or the enjoyment of the game tonight but I'll say this on Arcia:

He's going to regress. Dude's BABIP is 80 points over his career norms. Regression is inevitable.

That said, the thing that has surprised me the most is that his defense seems to have settled in as a little above average. If he can play above average defense he'll hit enough to be okay at SS.

I don't think he'll end the season with numbers to write home about but as long as his defense holds, his bat should be enough to play.

He's no star and could become unplayable if his defense collapses but so long as his defense at SS stays as is, he's okay.

Shut the **** up already for 10 minutes

I’m mostly kidding but god damn but a sock in this stupid point and enjoy it

Mets had 85%+ win probability in all three games and lost them all

At what point do you factor in their history. Like with the Falcons there's almost no 4th quarter lead that they can have that I would give them better than a 60% chance to win.

Let it go already. Jesus Christ.

Dude, did you even read the post? I didn't think Arcia was going to be playable. I'm coming around to the idea he is. Learn to recognize a little contrition.

That win - and really the entire sweep - was euphoric. What a HUGE series for the Braves. The bats are back to normal, the bullpen looks great and the rotation has been mainly shoving.

But on the rotation, I am slightly concerned with Strider. I think that he will be fine long-term, but it's clear he's going through some growing pains. My absolute best guess is that he's overcorrected when his command isn't where it needs to be. It's just hard to see him throw 94.4. He needs to be hitting 97, at minimum, on a consistent basis. I'm not a pitcher, so does anyone else have any thoughts?

I remember when Moneyball first came out a lot of folks discounted the concept of the closer. Losing Diaz has really hurt the Mets big-time. You build your bullpen backwards from the closer and in the absence of Diaz, the Mets have a big serving of goulash.

When you lose your closer it's a domino effect. Everyone has to shift up a spot which makes every single spot in your pen weaker.

I had to watch replay so I knew results as I watched. But how anyone didn’t like that broadcast is beyond me. What a break from your prototypical broadcast. Felt like I was just in my living room watching the game with 4 Braves legends. No script. Everything was just real. I would love to see more of those. Got a sense that those guys really loved playing together.

On another note, team meetings 1st of every month if this is what happens after them. Jeez the offense is cooking. I mean all of them are clicking.

Yes- WE all got it.

And all of it has been beaten to death.

Just be in the moment and not lawyer it to death.

Enjoy

I am enjoying it. That was a phenomenal game. The team is clicking with no one having to do the lion's share. IIRC, every starter had at least one hit last night.

Exactly. Mets' bullpen seems to be scrambling to get guys in the proper role. Think of how much Iglesias' return has meant to the Braves.

Is Show hey having a slow start? I could see Buck whining about Diaz going down, but I wonder if something like that happens if it would have happened regardless, like in spring. He didn't do anything crazy, so I would say there was something pre-existing and it was just when not if. So this really seems like a pathetic attempt to save your job.. personally I would just shut up and manage the best I can and when I get fired, publically blast the GM for building a team based on what you have done versus what you can do.

Albies' RH splits slowly starting to revert back to his career averages. That shouldn't be surprising for anyone looking at the raw stats. Insanely low BABIP vs RHP, especially considering he has above average speed. Of course, we should also expect his numbers vs LHP to regress a good bit as well.

Either way, the talk of him switching to RH only was definitely a bit pre-mature, especially since it's a move we don't even know will be successful. He's never been amazing from the left side other than very small 2020 sample, but he's generally been pretty decent as a LHH over his career.

Arcia has also never hit the ball harder this consistently. He is sporting a hard hit rate of 45% right now, which is by far the highest of his career. And this is after posting by far the highest hard hit % of his career in 2022. I'm not saying his BABIP is sustainable. But I think it's safe to say that his career average BABIP is likely not an accurate baseline at this point. He's quite clearly a better hitter now than he was in Milwaukee.
