GDT #61, 6/8/14: Braves (Harang) vs. Diamondbacks (Anderson); 4:10 EDT

Welp, this was just another loss that we gave away. It would be really cool if our guys would show a little bit and actually get guys out. I can't even express how frustrating it is that we've actually been scoring runs and pretty regularly but our bullpen can't shut down some of the worst of hitters. This team started out the opposite, then they continue to go the opposite.

It's NOT all Fredi's fault. Our players have to play better, simple as that. It'll be huge once we can get Simmons-Walden-Kimbrel as our 7th-8th-9th inning guys. I think Walden will be huge, but still.

We've beaten up on these teams for a couple innings and they've beaten up on us. From the Red Sox to the Mariners to the Diamondbacks. We had every single one of the series one or at least split (Mariners). We've got to get better, it's simple as that... and it now starts with a lineup change and bullpen help.

No it is not all Fredi's fault. But a few things came together in this game that he contributed to.

1) Over-utilization of Avilan in late May. 6 games in 7 days. Day game after high stress pitches previous night against Mariners. That kind of usage leads to injuries/loss of effectiveness.
2) Under-utilization of Hale. Had not pitched since May 31. That type of usage leads to rustiness/loss of effectiveness.
3) Not pinch hitting Gattis for Laird with the bases loaded in the 8th.
4) Not pinch hitting for Harang in the 7th with a runner in scoring position/sending Harang out in the seventh even though he had not looked sharp and was lucky at that point to be carrying a shutout.

This loss is 90 percent on the manager for the above reasons. The players made it interesting in the end despite Fredi tripping over his fat belly in the dugout.

Not pinch hitting for Laird with Gattis was about as stupid as I've seen in a while. That was awful.

For the Fredi supporter(s) how can you defend the decision to not pinch hit Gattis in Lair's spot?

He probably didn't want Gattis to be burned (we all just assume as Gattis fans he's going to hit a Grand Slam) after one AB, just incase we get to extras. Still probably didn't want Gattis to play after two straight night games.

Laird was 2-3 but actually could've been 3-3 for had it not been for Prado making an outstanding play to rob him of a down the line double he would of head into that AB 3-3.

I'm not going to sit here and say Fredi was a moron for not PH Gattis, but there's always reasons for actions and we don't know all of the details.

not a Fredi supporter but we only needed a single there and Laird is as good a candidate for that as Gattis. Gotta use Gattis as a PH in a game like yesterday's somewhere., anywhere. The only reason he isn't playing is to rest his knee's, right? So he should be your first pinch hitter. But Laird is pretty good at making contact and if you hit for him either Gattis or Doumit has to catch, that's the argument anyway.

Also keep in mind Kimbrel would be on fumes pitching 3 days in a row like that.

Fred must've wanted Laird and Pena to hit back to back singles, instead of Gattis hitting a Granny and only being up 2 with nobody LOB. Probably had a feeling it was going to be a crooked inning.

I don't criticize Fredi at all generally but these were all eyebrow raisers from me yesterday. The way Gattis has been seeing the ball, get his arse up there and give the team the best shot you have.
