GDT 7/14/19: A permanent lineup change?

50

It is a wake up call for him. Even though he did good last night, but he is still guessing too much and needs to change. It is a teaching tool by the coaches knowing he is better than this.

Snit probably associates Swanson and albies getting going this year with their time in the 8-hole. Probably thinking it might work with Riley

I was about to post this. This is a snitism. He think the 8 hole teaches patience. Maybe there is truth out. But I don’t mind the move personally. I also am NOT in favor of sending Riley down in place of ender. Let ender be a spot starter with defensive specialist as his calling card until he proves he can be more of an offensive threat. Let Riley learn at the highest level in the highest leverage situation

I would send Riley to the pen. He's got a good arm and maybe can throw strikes.

No reason to send him to pen. Go college style where you just bring the reliever to the mound from his position. This would be the type of cutting edge stuff the rays would do. When we need to sub someone in for Riley in defense, he can pitch. I'm sure Riley can get mlb hitters out...

Great?

Okay, if that is what you think, more power to you.

Consistent 3 WAR player. I consider that great, but of course that is arbitrary.

Either way, Riley isn’t a 3 WAR guy with his current approach and defensive limitations.

The other benefit to this is we can finally start resting Acuna. We don’t have another CF on the roster.

Speaking of Riley's defense... how did he go from pretty negative to 0.6 on fangraphs? Is that a mistake or what?

i mean we'd be stupid not to try it tbh

SSS. We probably need the rest of the season to get a good sense of his abilities in LF.

What we can probably glean from the data right now is that Riley has good range in LF, but makes too many errors. If he can cut down on the miscues, he becomes a legitimate corner OF option for next season if we decide to sign Donaldson or Rendon.

I'm old and as a result somewhat old school, but Riley doesn't make a lot of sense in the 8-hole because he doesn't seem to want to draw a walk. I've always thought that if push comes to shove, put a guy who shows he can walk batting 8th and at the very least you have a better chance at turning the line-up over. It's not that big a deal because I'm not totally wedded to any particularly strict philosophy of line-up construction, but at the margins it doesn't make a ton of sense.

Ozzie doesn’t walk either. I put my worst hitter 8th, to give him the least amount of at bats.

He's a -3 Outs Above Average defender with a below average 'jump'.

OOA doesn't have everything for an outfielder defensively but when talking about range I trust it over DRS and UZR.
