GDT 7/28/14 Santana vs. Lane

That's just about the ideal way a game should go. Great start by Santana. Timely hitting by Gattis. Shut down mode for Kimbrel.

Padres are a team we usually struggle with, and we certainly looked like we would Friday. So good series, better than I expected.

Ended this home stand on a good note. Overall it was a disappointing set of games considering the opponents.

Given the way we struggled to win 3 games against the Padres, I hope Wren realizes that it would be better if the Braves were sellers and started the rebuilding process.

I would rather stand pat then try to add players while trading away good prospects.

The type of players we may get aren't going to make a world of difference. Sure Andrew Miller would be an awesome lefty reliever, but he can't hit. Maybe he could take over Minor's spot in the rotation.

Am I mistaken in quoting you as having said: "They should become sellers to try and acquire more talent in the form of prospects."

Is that quote accurate or not?

I do not understand why a sizable segment on this board wants us to become sellers....

We are 1 game back from the top record in the NL. We are only percentage points behind the other 2 division leaders.

Time to make a run for it.

No you are correct. I said this a few days ago. Realistic expectations considered I know they won't become sellers.

I'd even consider giving up Laird if the return were big enough.

I detect your tongue as being firmly in your cheek, but I hope they stand pat unless it's a move at the margins. If they can get someone like Ruggiano or Bonifacio (as position players) or a solid bullpen arm for someone like Cody Martin or Aaron Northcraft, I would probably do it. That said, I don't want to part with anyone resembling one of our top five prospects. I'm not that high on Kubitza, but I don't know if I'd trade him right now either.

I never thought we would make a splash via trade this season. Don't see where they can afford to take on any significant pay roll. A couple lesser deals like you mentioned are more likely to happen. I would prefer that ideal over an all out "buy now" mode.

I think we should just sell every year for prospects so we can win minor league championships. **** this winning divisions and being a few games from the best record in the nl.

That's a good idea. All those division titles we have really amounted to a ton of post season success.

I'm pretty much in agreement. Upgrade at the margins and use guys like Northcraft or Schlosser as the currency to make those upgrades.

Agreed. Plus Bonifacio probably makes even more sense for us now than before the season. I wanted him last year and this off season as he's someone that can play all over including in centerfield and at third base. He's also someone we can platoon with various players at those spots, among others (and he can lead off when he's going good too).

Plus we need to improve our bench and Schafer needs to go. So adding another speedy player to replace his spot that brings more to the table would be ideal. All Schafer can do is steal bases but he cannot steal first, Bonifacio is a much better hitter and can play more positions too. And they both are great at stealing bases.

Good win today, great pitching by Santana and Gattis had a great day. He called a great game and also had three hits, including a homer and two out RBI single. It looks like his timing is coming back now. So might be time to move him back up in the line-up.
