yes.. shoulder strain. can start rehab second week in Sept. or so. He could be cooked though. He had the docs tie rope between two tendons in his elbow to aviod TJS.. and now shoulder issues.

Then you have Jessie who was hit in the leg with a line drive and is being rebuilt by labs I guess. so who knows about him. I would love to upgrade the pen, but these guys would have to be done for the year imo to do so.
 
I could see the Braves getting Verlander for someone like Grissom if they ate a large chunk of his contract. It would all depend on how much money we have and if AA thinks it will hamstring the team for the next couple of years.

Our WS run plus declining Morton's option will pay for JV's salary next year.

If we get Verlander then that pretty much assures Morton's option isn't picked up.

The problem there is the Mets would have to pay over half the AAV each remaining season to even get Verlander down to Morton-level AAV; and, by inputs, Verlander is pitching about as well as Morton (same fip, with Morton actually owning a much better xfip).

Verlander is still really good once you consider contact quality, etc. .280 xWOBA this year is what Charlie was for us back in 2021 (Charlie has really regressed by this measure the last two years).

In other words, JV is still capable of being a TOR guy.

It's hard to gauge what the Braves payroll will be the next few years. They are in a great spot and I'm honestly surprised it's as high as it's gotten. Hard to imagine a scenario where both Morton and JV are on the team in 2024. But you're right. Morton at 20 million is a safe bet. He's going to post another ~3 WAR season this year which is what's he's been doing since 2017.
 
Morton is the Ozzie of pitchers. Just looks like a complete negative player.. but at the end of the year.. there he is with 180 innings at 3-5 wins. Well worth the 20 million imo.

How he compares to Morton is irrelevant. The Braves need a SP, and Verlander is the best option on the market outside of ERod. Unlike ERod, Verlander is also likely to be a good option for next year (performance-wise, not money-wise).
