GDT: 7/31/13 Rockies at Braves

No one every projected him to have THAT kind of power....nor, has he ever shown that kind of power at any level.

So I go back to my Adrelton Simmons reference. Did anyone project him to have power?

Power potential is the hardest thing to project. Again, obviously I could be dead wrong but I just see Freeman being a 30-35 home run hitter.

Simmons is based on half a year so far....you're projecting Freeman to be a 900 OPS guy for a sustained peroid. Also, it's quite different comparing 10 HR's a year to 30+, you can have a year were you run into a few but running into them EVERY year? Not so likely.

Its about teh percentage spike though and how power develops in players. its different for everyone. The only thing that is holding Freemans power down is hte type of swing that he has. Maybe that doesn't change. But I just see him hitting balls harder and harder every year. I think he learns how to turn on more pitches as he goes through the league more and more.

People seem to underestimate that Freeman is still only 23. He left the minors at age 20. He really isn't coming out of nowhere. He is just developing at the MLB level instead of the minor league level.

I don't see why Joey Votto isn't a good comparison. He wasn't a full time major leaguer until he was 23. He had a career minor league OPS of .862 in 6 minor league seasons. 2004 was his only big power season in the minors (hit 38 homers that season, but never more than 22 in any other)

Votto's lowest OPS in the majors is 874, that's the only time he's been under 900.

He put up an OPS over 900, five times at various different levels before being called up, Freeman....zero. Came close, twice, though.

Be honest...did you think Freeman would be this productive?

Yes

I predicted him as a 290-300 hitter with 20-25 HR's and a mid 8's OPS. Isn't that what he's doing? OPS is a little higher than I would think but nothing crazy.

I expect him to be a very good player, I just don't expect elite power. Not sure what the big deal is.

Again...Votto got to develop in the minors leagues. Freeman is doing most of his development in the major leagues.

thethe, are we related? I agree, once again, with you.

No way we trade Heyward. if we do, Wren deserves to be shot out of a cannon into the Grand Canyon.

Heyward is the guy who we should be built around. Mac staying around is something that carries us with experience while Heyward and Freeman start to hit their stride.

Only reason I'd trade him or consider it is because I don't think he will sign a extension with us.

I just think it's silly to call anyone untouchable....If Seattle offered us Walker and Ramirez for Freeman would you really say no? Not that they would....but what if.

Yes, they are unproven.

Freeman is a proven stud.

I'd say no to that trade in a heartbeat. We don't need pitching.

LOL

Wasn't everyone *****ing about how we need to upgrade our pitching? And how we need an Ace? But you wouldn't want the 2nd best pitching prospect in the game? 7th overall? And another top 40-50 prospect?

I would say it's alot easier to find a 290 - 20/25 HR 1B than it is to find pitcher like Walker.

Freeman could hit 20 some years, he could hit 30 some years. Either way, the dude is a very good hitter. Is there anyone you want up at the plate over Freeman (on the Braves?) He has a 136 OPS+ as a 23 year old and a career 118.

Maybe McCann. But, Mac and Freeman are clearly the best 2 hitters on the team.

You nuthug too many prospects. You aren't going to win with an all prospect team.
