GDT 7/5/14 ATL (HARANG) vs. ARI (BOLSINGER) 4:10 ET

That poses a great question, even though a defensive catcher may not be that valuable, very early returns on his bat seem to be positive. Versatility as a late defensive replacement could add value. It isn't as if Uggla offers either.

Uggla really is just a waste right now. He has gotten the occasional start like once every two weeks. But he's not someone you want taking prime PH attempts and he's not going to be a lte game defensive replacement. He can only play 1 position. Just horrible. Cutting him and schafer when Gattis comes back plus getting someone that can play center and or hit would be beneficial in so many ways. Just got to cut bait with those guys.

I'm cautious on the bat. Yes, he's hit. He's needed some adjustment time at every level. ML pitchers may figure out they don't need to throw him strikes. OTOH, he looks like he's got a little plate discipline creeping in.

He does need regular time, either here or Gwinnett. And there's an interesting problem brewing. I'm still very much a Gattis guy, but I worry about his health. If Bethancourt hits at the big league level, that may change my thoughts. But as of now, Gattis is a .900 OPS catcher. A unicorn.

I'm OK with Schafer. He hasn't seen the field much with three young, healthy outfielders. He needs to make more contact, but that's why he's on our bench and not leading off for Houston.

It's somebody else's turn to wait on Dan, and you're right, he has no value to us. Really time for him to go. We've been playing with a short bench for six weeks.

You don't think Fredi's gonna start him today against Miley, do you?

Agree. Gattis bat trumps everything IMO. If we got in a playoff series with a team that just steals at will I'd rethink that just a little, but as of now, Gattis is about our best hitter regardless of defensive capability. He plays IMO. He can change a game with a swing at any time .

I think we have better bench pieces at AAA at this point. Shaefer and Uggla could both be cut loose and replaced with folks at AAA.

I think Gattis at worst an average defensive catcher. I'm just not sure how much catching is wearing down on his body. I think in the playoffs you play him everyday but in the regular season I'd like us to hold back on his workload to ensure his health later on.

Personally I think it's early to be ringing the injury prone bell.

It may be but I'd rather take some caution especially because we have a supposed stud catching prospect right there to plug in. I think that plays a part in the decision as well. Its really a win win. You can showcase your guy and then give Gattis some more rest at the same time. These games that CB starts you can pick your spots when you want the bear to break the game open. We all saw what he did off the bench last year. Thats a huge weapon to have.

No way would the braves just cut Laird. I think Bet is going to go back to the minors but its not a bad thing. He will be back in September. I think it does point that Gattis could be moved in the offseason.

Unless the braves want David Price then Christian Bethancourt isn't getting traded.

I would go for AJ burnett or Ian Kennedy.

If Braves could get a negotiating window I'd trade CB/Sims and another prospect not named Peraza for Price.

I would not ring that bell yet either, but I note with some concern the two back/side injuries in two years. For a guy with such powerful and violent swing, it's noteworthy.

They can get bette prospects from other teams and not require a window.

Price isn't happening.

If the Braves wanted to do it I think a package built around Bethancourt would be very appealing to the Rays. Tampa has been looking for a quality catcher since Jesus was a teenager. To get one that potentially has the upside of the good Molina, and that is cost controlled for 5 more years, would have to be something they would look at seriously. Price would probably cost Bethancourt plus Sims and probably one more fair to middling prospect, and I'm not sure the Braves are willing to pay that much for anyone, even a great starter who might be open to a long term deal with his childhood favorite team.

For the record I'd do the trade listed above, provided that the third player was someone far enough away from the majors and not a premium prospect. You have to give talent to get talent. This team has a window of two to three years, and a pitcher like Price could be the difference between advancing and going home early in October.

The talk about negotiating windows never made any sense to me, simply because I can't recall any teams ever having one in a trade. The team that gets Price will get a window all right - from day one after the trade through the end of 2015.

#Braves C Evan Gattis (back) says he's yet to be cleared for running. Unsure of timetable for return from DL.

Going off the Samardzija trade, I would guess the price for David Price would be Peraza plus at least one other top prospect (Bethancourt, Sims or Hursh). Emphasis on at least.

According to Bowman: The Braves said they would likely wait four to five days before judging Gattis' response to the injection he received near his spinal cord.

He got the epidural on Wednesday. So my guess is he will be evaluated today or tomorrow.

More like Bethancourt, Sims, Peraza and another prospect.

Price is that much better then Samardzjja and has another year of control.

If the Braves could get Price for the cost of Peraza and Bethancourt and no others, or with one marginal throw in, I'd do it. Peraza is blocked at SS by Simmons for the foreseeable future. If LaStella continues to play well at 2B he provides us a quality option that could potentially block Peraza as well. The front office is going to have to make a decision on how to handle the Gattis/ Bethancourt situation sooner rather than later. Why not use him for a piece that could help us win a World Series now? If those prospects remain blocked they are going to be dealt at some point anyway.
