GDT 8/15/21: Braves @ Gnats - A Smyly Sunday Afternoon

The positive for Atlanta is this pitcher is really bad. So they hit him, as long as their competent hitters are up to bat.

Soler pulls everything…I wonder if he realizes or accepts that that’s probably the reason he’s been hitting like .100 the past 3 seasons.

Yes, but you need at least 3 consistently good starting pitchers during a season. We don’t have that right now.

I agree with that. Right now we have Morton, fried, smyly, touki, and ynoa (Tuesday). Need to make sure Ian goes into touki's spot, so we can break up the pen killers (smyly and most likely ynoa coming back)

Cheezo-Beezo. I hated the Smyly signing and I'm not half as hard on him as you guys are. He is who he is. I will have to take a closer look, but I'm not seeing the uptick in fastball velocity that was advertised during the off-season. He's only 1 mph slower over the length of the season 2020 to 2021, but just watching the recent Gameday velocities, he hits 91 a few times a game with everything else below that.

The Nats have lost 11 of 12 (once again, thanks Will Smith). Snit doesn't need to let Smyly "figure it out" go a full 5 and give up 5-6 runs and possibly lose this easily winnable game against a bad team.

Touki and ynoa going next 2 days. We need innings from smyly if possible

Get his sorry ass out of the game and move him to the fckn bullpen…4 innings a start isn’t doing this team any good at all.

It's really too bad the season started in April. He'd be polishing up the Cy Young Award if it hadn't.

Obviously, the early season counts, but I think what you've done lately counts a lot too... sorta why we got soler and didn't just look at his horrible numbers

I agree. The problem with Smyly though is the same as it’s been all year. He’s a hard twice through the order guy, and that basically makes him a glorified opener. With the way the Braves deploy their pitching staff, you’ve got to have a legit starter as your number 3 guy. I agree he’s a perfectly acceptable 4 or 5.
