GDT 8/5/23: Braves @ Cubs - Respect your Elder

Man Snit is baffling. Decides its crucial to squeeze Elder an extra 1-2 innings when he has nothing and clearly is going to give up runs - and is basically the difference in the game - but the rationale I suppose is to "save the pen"

Then down 7-4 decides to use one of our ace relievers.

Come on man. It's the regular season, not the playoffs. You cant treat every game like it's Game 7. Nothing wrong trying to get as much as you could from Elder given there isnt a day off until the 17th. Also this was Minter's first game since Tuesday.

I mean I'd counter that with saying I agree - we've got a ridiculously deep pen. Elder is struggling, presumably on his way to blowing past his career high in innings, had thrown 85 pitches and gets brought out to "gut through" pitches 85-97 over this old school "have to get 5 innings out of him mentality" - if anything, prepping for the long haul and knowing Elder at this point is likely going to be counted on in the post-season, now is the time to avoid over-working him just so we can say he "gutted out 5 innings"

So I would say I agree with you - lets not let traditionally customs stand in the way of keeping the team fresh for the playoffs. Now is the time to be keeping our starters fresh and not over-working them - and certainly not over-working them when they are pitching like ****.

Its the same thing with Strider. He's an ace and the future - why have this mentality of need to save the pen at the expense of the most important arm in our organization? Yet Snit will frequently bring him out for the 7th, stretch the pitch count and then only take him out after he struggles.

I agree on Strider, especially last game. He had no business going into the 7th inning. Today, eh, we're already down 5 early, try to save the pen as much as you can with no day off for awhile.

If Ronald goes 40 homers and 60-70 steals while hitting over .300 then it’s his.

It's gonna be his even if he doesn't get 40 homers.

He's pacing for an 8 WAR season. Freddie pacing in the 7's.

(Shohei is pacing for a 10, which is mindblowing).

Ronald doing this on the best team in MLB is going to all but guarantee it.

This isn’t really a race is it?
Acuna far and away on every mock or poll of this I’ve seen all year

Have you seen Freddie's numbers lately? He was 0.2 fWAR behind Acuna with thr same OPS and higher WRC+ entering today.

I think Acuna still has the edge but Freddy has closed quick. The writers may still get hard over Acunas power and speed combo but Freddie is right there.

Acuna has matched Freeman’s BA but FF won’t ever match Acunas power and speed. It’s Acuna’s if he stays healthy.

Two things that are going to wind up costing this team a World Series if not improved on quickly: defense and base-running. Another horrible error cost us that big first inning (along with Elder's walks), and Rosario with another bone-headed base-running snafu on a play that should have gotten us a run closer in the middle part of the game. Between him, Arcia, and Ozuna, I'm already picturing their base-running costing us in a big spot in the playoffs.

Higher ISO also.

Crazy that FF's best 2 years are at age 32 and 33 for the dodgers

Applying aging curves blindly without any context was always a hysterical part of the freeman discussion. Guy is going to be a monster for many more years and I hope we don’t see him in the HOF as a dodger.

When you factor in the deferred money, the Braves offered him more money than the Dodgers.

I’m happy with Olson. Preference would have always been freeman bit that ship has sailed.

Both sides were at fault. Think we still should have just given freeman whatever he wanted but thjnj we played it too cute. He was the franchise along with Acuna. Would have been nice to have him a brave his whole career.

Once freeman felt slighted he acted like a child and screwed things up beyond the point of repair. It sucks what happened.
