GDT 8/7/23: Pirates @ Bravos - Time to hit our STRIDEr

Remember when Olson couldn't tag the runner at 1b that led to 3 runs? I remember. Our DH at 1b seems to cost us runs every game

I know you’re not a Matt Olson fan for some reason, but the walks in that inning along with Strider not being able to put hitters away was a much bigger issue in that inning.

Three pretty rough performances in a row - each of them lost by 2 runs or less.[/QUOTE

Pitching pitching pitching pitching

Plain and simple...we don't have the arms to be competitive on October...it's been this way all year and they've just been able to hit their way out of it..

I love Olson's bat. He was a huge part of getting back in this game, but his glove is a damn problem. Strider was horrible tonight, but he's been great all year. Olson's glove has been terrible for 2 years now

Yes, Olson has made misplays at 1st. But that was not the issue tonight in that inning. It was Strider’s inability to get guys out and allowing those three walks. If he gets Reynolds out, we’re not even discussing that play. And even after, Spencer had a chance to end the inning and did not. So don’t point fingers at Matt Olson here.

Olson hasn't had the best road trip with the glove in these gross conditions here and in Chicago.

But let's chill out on saying he's a terrible defender.

He's a lot better than most 1B in the league.

Stop overreacting to a losing streak guys.

There's 23 qualifiers on fangraphs. Olson is 16th in def value.

Thank you for helping provide some sanity

Olson and Rosario play different positions and the game totals are different (ER 97, Olson 109), but Olson's defensive value is way worse than Eddie's... -10.7 to -3.6. No one has a problem saying Eddie sucks out there

I'm freaking out about this pitching staff...it's awful

In the end, I think this is the best roster in baseball and I'm not sure it's that close. The only thing stopping them from running over everyone is themselves. They realistically should be in the middle of a 9 of 11 (or better) streak. It's just brutal that they keep shooting themselves in the foot

Agree

I agree when talking about pure physical ability. However, it's also a roster with a fairly low baseball IQ, and that extends to the manager. That becomes an issue in games that aren't won on pure talent superiority. There's the baserunning mistakes, the defensive blunders, but also not knowing when to take a pitch and cut down on the aggressiveness when a pitcher is clearly struggling and giving away free bases. And then there's Snit's predictable and illogical in-game moves and refusal to give his starters regular days off throughout the season. To me, those things are big issues in the kinds of games the Braves have played the last few days, and will be a problem in the postseason.

Also, Strider is puzzling me. For much of the season, he's been unable to stop the bleeding once he runs into trouble. Some of that is certainly bad luck / sequencing, but it often feels like he gets the jitters once a couple of runners reach, loses control of his pitches and in turn loses part of his arsenal. A team like the Pirates isn't supposed to get the kind of swings off him they got last night, unless they know what to look for. With his peripherals, he has no business having an ERA near 4, yet that's where it sits.

I'm not a pitching expert (clearly), but it looked like he lost his release point, overcompensated by taking a few MPH off his pitches to locate and just lost it after that. Had he been able to get an out while it was still a two- or three-run game, I bet he's able to go another two or three innings. He's a good pitcher, but he's young and has pitched like 450 total innings. Max had that in the minors alone. It takes time for most of these guys to totally figure it out.
