GDT 9/2/23: Braves @ Dodgers - Keep on crushing

Honestly the Phillies scare me more than anyone. We shouldn’t lose to them but we shouldn’t have last year either

The main takeaway from this series for me is how underwhelming the dodgers rotation is. Quite frankly, it was shocking how mediocre they are. I have a hard time being concerned in the least about the Braves offense vs these pitchers, and the only way I see the Braves losing the NLCS to them is if Fried/Strider have a bad game, Morton melts down, and Elder gets shelled.

I kinda felt like they were overrated coming into the year. They let a lot of guys and money go for salary cap management and were counting on some young pitchers to stay healthy, which didn’t happen. I didn’t realize Urias had lost so much juice until the other night….and it seems he’s not happy about it.

They have good SP, a dangerous lineup and a bullpen that can shove. Would not be a fun series if we played them again.

They’re definitely built for a playoff series (4 good SP and an offense that hits homeruns), but that bullpen is pretty rough.

I think last year's playoff series has spooked us some. The braves have been much better than the Phillies for years now. Anything can happen in the playoffs as evidenced by last season, but the braves are clearly the better team

With our top 2 starters pitching through an injury and a sickness it shouldn't be looked at this way. Bad timing beat us not the Phillies. Playoffs a month earlier or later a month we win that series. Also we have MVP Acuna this year instead of just last year's Acuna. He clearly wasn't 100% either.

I just can't find myself scared unless Hoskins is back and Nola, in particular, returns to form. Wheeler, Nola, Saurez, Walker, and Lorenzen don't scare me in the slightest unless Aaron is his normal self.

Plus, they shouldn't have won last year but did because Max still had the lingering flu and had dropped like 10 pounds, Strider hadn't pitched at all in like four weeks and Morton was cranked by a line drive in his first outing. Not saying we still shouldn't have played better, but those are so unfortunate lol

Wheeler usually dominates us, and for whatever reason we cannot hit Suarez. Nola has been up and down, but he's a big game pitcher. They are a team built for the playoffs, not the regular season. I do agree we should be favored as long as we're healthy but would not be a fun series.

Wheeler is a beast. I worry about him, for sure. Ranger is a good finesse pitcher but I feel pretty confident we can hit him this season. Aaron Nola is one of my favorite pitchers (don't ask me why), and I watch many of his starts. He's not the same dude right now. Maybe it clicks, but he's not someone I'm even remotely worried about.

I’m just saying they scare me more than the Dodgers

Phaillies do not have a good rotation. It's Wheeler, a declining Nola who is no better than Morton, and some league average guys. And while their offense has plenty of pop, it's filled with guys who don't get on base and strike out a ton.

The only team in the NL worth being "scared" about is the team that we just beat 3 of 4 games in their own house. And the Dodgers were arguably the hottest team in baseball coming in to this series.

All the talk of the Phillies, and a talk worth having of course, we will get a good idea where the 2 teams match up over the next few weeks.

We play them 7 times over a 2 week stretch just before the playoffs begin. So surely we will see Wheeler and/or Nola twice.

Season series up to date vs the Phillies starters

05/25 : Nola: 6IP 8H 5 ER 2BB 7K 3HR
05/26 : Walker: 6.2 IP , 10H 3 ER 1 BB 1 K 1HR
05/27 : Wheeler: 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB , 12 K, 0 HR
05/28: Bullpen game: Starter: 0.2 IP, 6 H, 7 R (5 ER) 0 BB 0 K 2 HR
06/20: Suarez : 6 IP 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 HR
06/21: Nola: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K , 0 HR

We sweep the Phillies are it's possible, although unlikely, we could knock them out of the playoffs, which would be ever so sweet.

It would actually be funny and amazing to see them lose in the first round and not even advance to face us in the NLDS.

The way the NLDS schedule lines up, they'd be able to use Wheeler twice in a 5 game series on regular rest, in Game 2 and Game 5. They'd only be able to use Nola once, in Game 3. Would assume Suarez and Walker are the other two games.

We can NEVER hit Wheeler or Suarez… it’s about 50/50 with Nola.
