The MLB’s only alternative was to move up the start time of yesterday’s game, which wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Mets didn’t want to come here on Monday.
So what is ideal rotation for us going forward?
I think you still need to go Sale and Fried next two days so that they could be on regular rest for game 2 / 3 of a 1st round series (or game one of NLDS if we made it)
I personally then work backwards and say that if it comes down to last game of season, every starter of ours needs to pitch at least once - and at the same time, you hope things enable the second game of double header to not matter. So working backwards I generally would say I want to ensure either SS or Lopez can go game one of playoffs - not Morton and obviously not Holmes
On that basis, I personally go with Morton Sunday to keep max optionality for SS / Lopez heading into Monday. Then on Monday if we need only one win, you go with one of them. I'd personally go Lopez and hope that SS can start game one of playoffs. I go Lopez on basis of him being rusty and I'd rather him go second to last regular season game to knock off rust (with some margin of error), then him going game one of playoffs.
If that all plays out, things could be worse - you still end up with SS, Sale and Fried in 1st round, all on regular rest. The worst case scenario is you lose both games and the "opportunity cost" is that one of the games started by SS would have been Fried. The positive of this scenario, however, is that if it goes three games, you have Fried in decisive game as opposed to SS; and if we won the first two, you open the division series with Fried. If we went SS vs. Mets, I still feel fine with all of this logic and Lopez going game one of playoffs.
This scenario further reinforces to me that we should go Morton on Sunday on the basis of game theory - the worst case imo is Morton sucks and causes us to need to use all of our starters and play a meaningful double header - but I personally take chat chance over using our best 4 starters and then being forced to start Morton in game one of playoffs.
All of the above makes me feel that despite the chaos, things should still be manageable. Clearly the one scenario that will simply F us is if both games of double header are meaningful. Then we either have to go Holmes or a starter on short rest.
In that worst-case scenario, I would personally just go more of a planned bullpen game. Holmes for no more than two innings, Lee for 1-2 innings, Bummer 1-2 innings, Pierce for an inning, Jimenez for one and Iggy for two - and would open with either Holmes or Lee based off opposing team line-up
