GDT 9/25/24: Braves vs Mets - Sale for the Triple Crown

I agree. However, the posts I am reading is that mlb had alternatives available but the Braves didn’t want to do any and hoped to get the games in. So the org rolled the dice and it crapped out and now they play a double header the day before a WC game. One or both of the Mets and Braves are going to wreck their pitching before playing in a 3 game series. The fans of both teams should be mad.

Now MLB probably should have stepped in but the league is run by the owners puppet and would never do that.

The MLB’s only alternative was to move up the start time of yesterday’s game, which wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Mets didn’t want to come here on Monday.

I thought I read something about an alternative site(s).. but nothing I read yesterday was substantiated.

I personally don't blame the Braves for wanting to get the gate and taking that chance.. just going to suck come Tuesday if they make it.. if they don't it will be fun hearing the Mutts fans whine.

If the braves get in, they could have sale and fried on regular rest for games 2 and 3 of WC.

I was thinking more of the pen. A double header pretty much guarantees every pen guy will throw. I also don't trust twit on how to manage a double header.

I could also see the Braves pushing both guys up on short rest versus throwing a Grant Holmes in game 1.

So what is ideal rotation for us going forward?

I think you still need to go Sale and Fried next two days so that they could be on regular rest for game 2 / 3 of a 1st round series (or game one of NLDS if we made it)

I personally then work backwards and say that if it comes down to last game of season, every starter of ours needs to pitch at least once - and at the same time, you hope things enable the second game of double header to not matter. So working backwards I generally would say I want to ensure either SS or Lopez can go game one of playoffs - not Morton and obviously not Holmes

On that basis, I personally go with Morton Sunday to keep max optionality for SS / Lopez heading into Monday. Then on Monday if we need only one win, you go with one of them. I'd personally go Lopez and hope that SS can start game one of playoffs. I go Lopez on basis of him being rusty and I'd rather him go second to last regular season game to knock off rust (with some margin of error), then him going game one of playoffs.

If that all plays out, things could be worse - you still end up with SS, Sale and Fried in 1st round, all on regular rest. The worst case scenario is you lose both games and the "opportunity cost" is that one of the games started by SS would have been Fried. The positive of this scenario, however, is that if it goes three games, you have Fried in decisive game as opposed to SS; and if we won the first two, you open the division series with Fried. If we went SS vs. Mets, I still feel fine with all of this logic and Lopez going game one of playoffs.

This scenario further reinforces to me that we should go Morton on Sunday on the basis of game theory - the worst case imo is Morton sucks and causes us to need to use all of our starters and play a meaningful double header - but I personally take chat chance over using our best 4 starters and then being forced to start Morton in game one of playoffs.

All of the above makes me feel that despite the chaos, things should still be manageable. Clearly the one scenario that will simply F us is if both games of double header are meaningful. Then we either have to go Holmes or a starter on short rest.

In that worst-case scenario, I would personally just go more of a planned bullpen game. Holmes for no more than two innings, Lee for 1-2 innings, Bummer 1-2 innings, Pierce for an inning, Jimenez for one and Iggy for two - and would open with either Holmes or Lee based off opposing team line-up

I’m worried about the Braves bats having to relearn how to hit with two days off. And then, since it looks like we’ll have to play that DH, we’re going to be at a severe pitching disadvantage.

My biggest fear is the high potential of not playing Friday. Double header on Sat which kills the post season for the Braves if they make it.

reasons Friday game will get canceled (potential):

The field will be a mess with 10 inches of rain over 2.5 days.

Royals might not be able to fly in Thursday

Helene slows down causing another rain out.

This fiasco is not over imo.

The amount of variables going into this last series is blowing my mind. What happens if the Mets have nothing to play for in the 2 games? What if we both just need 1 win? Can we just both agree to forfeit one game? When does everyone pitch. Sale can start game 1 vs KC but then isnt in line to start game 1 of WC anymore. And would have to start game 2 on only 4 days rest. 4 days is considered regular rest and he is getting 7 days rest before KC start. Then what do we do with Reynaldo. I would start him in game 2 vs KC. He was fine after a longer layoff last time vs Philly and this lines him up for a potential game 3 of the WC round. For the Last game vs KC SS would be on regular 4 days rest, Fried on 7 days and Morton on 8 days rest. You have to think they go with Fried here. His last regular season start as in Atlanta. Potentially for Atlanta as he wouldnt start in the WC round. That leaves SS on 5 days rest and Morton on 9 days rest for the Monday double header. If we win the same amount as AZ in the next 3 game series we need 2 win both vs the Mets to win a tiebreaker vs the DBags. If we win 1 more in the next 3 games we only need to win 1. If we lose more than them then we got nothing to play for. If we win 2 more than the DBags in the series we get in and only seeding vs Mets matters. If both SS and Morton start on Monday then on Tuesday we are looking at Grant Holmes Game 1 starter.

The league is always run by an owners puppet. They literally hire and fire him.

Looks like the Braves decided to inflict this pain on themselves and the Mets. Clearly it was a poor choice, and the championship hopes will suffer for it.

Again, what were the Braves supposed to do?

Anything other than absolutely nothing while a hurricane barreled down on them? I've seen many logical suggestions on a message board. Surely the brain trust down there could have at least attempted something more than...absolutely nothing.

Even a DH on Tuesday would have helped. Anything...literally anything other than absolutely nothing.

The only thing they could’ve done was a DH on Tuesday, since the Mets weren’t willing to play on Monday. That still leaves a game to make up though, and it wasn’t 100% certain that Wednesday would get rained out.

Braves announce this rotation for the Royals series:

FRI: Fried
SAT: TBA
SUN: TBA

So Sale hurt or are the Braves trying to save him for WC games that might not happen. If Sale pitches anything later than Saturday then he is toast for WC round for sure. So this is either Sale not feeling right or Kimbrel standing in the pen while the Dodgers take the lead.

If Sale was hurt he wouldn't have been announced as yesterdays starter.
