What am I missing that we can't just go with a bullpen game to start and then make a mid-inning call on if we have a chance to win or lose?
Dylan Lee - opener targeting two innings. He through 2 pitches yesterday, he should be fine. Heck he could go three if he really pitched well, albeit unlikely
Bummer - goes 3rd - and then goes 4th if he pitches well. He through 13 pitches yesterday
At that point we make the call - if game is competitive, we go with the "Plan A" and bridge rest of game with bullpen. If we are losing by a few runs, we audible and go to one of our emergency starters. The rest of Plan A imo would be:
Johnson for an inning in 5th - he only through 21 pitches yesterday. Similarly you stretch him for two if it goes well.
You probably need Luke Jackson for an inning in the 6th or Chavez?
7th - TBD?
8th and 9th I still think JJ and Iggy should be available. They didn't pitch Saturday and despite working twice yesterday, JJ through 8 and 11 pitches; and Iggy through 12 and 8 pitches. Obviously you'd only throw them in the scenario we have a chance to steal the game
I'm sure there are modifications to the above, my point is simply I don't view it that we can't bridge 9 innings with the pen and that seems like a better option to me than going with a pitcher that literally spent the entire season in the minor leagues - and again, if the game by the 3rd / 4th inning feels like it's not going our way, you pivot, save the guns and go to the emergency starter. In a best of 3 series, you can't just punt game one imo. At the same time, will have the luxury of only using JJ / Iggy if we have a chance to win the game
