GDT 9/30/24: Braves vs Mets - DH Game 2

I think we’ll see Ian or AJSS in game one, with a bullpen game the rest of the way. It’s not ideal, but you don’t have much of an option at this point. Losing Game 1 yesterday was brutal, but not having Sale after working so hard to save him for the WC is a back breaker. His back spasms must be really bad - he’s a bulldog, so not playing means it’s way past his normal tolerance levels.

Back pain is no joke, you just never know when it can flare up on you. Comes out of nowhere.

On the bright side If we somehow manage to win game 1 we will be in a pretty good position. We already expect to lose this game so feels like the pressure is on SD not us. That said, I have my doubts Sale is going to be better in 4 days. I think games 4-5 of DS or 1 of NLCS is earliest we could see him start again.

unfortunately, I have arthritis and totally understand and agree. It’s just weird for a personality like his haha he literally told AA that he’s “pitched through worse.”

I would piggy back AJSS and Anderson tonight letting them pitch at least 3 innings each and have Waldrep for the bullpen.

OxyContin should fix him right up. He may be shooting heroine a year from now, but hey, we need a win haha

NLDS starts on Saturday. Sale hasn't pitched since the 19th. I would think another 4 days should be enough rest. At this point we're probably looking at either SS or Sale to start game 1 of the NLDS, should we make it. Unless hell freezes over and we manage to sweep the Pads in games 1 and 2, and then we could start Lopez game 1.

What am I missing that we can't just go with a bullpen game to start and then make a mid-inning call on if we have a chance to win or lose?

Dylan Lee - opener targeting two innings. He through 2 pitches yesterday, he should be fine. Heck he could go three if he really pitched well, albeit unlikely

Bummer - goes 3rd - and then goes 4th if he pitches well. He through 13 pitches yesterday

At that point we make the call - if game is competitive, we go with the "Plan A" and bridge rest of game with bullpen. If we are losing by a few runs, we audible and go to one of our emergency starters. The rest of Plan A imo would be:

Johnson for an inning in 5th - he only through 21 pitches yesterday. Similarly you stretch him for two if it goes well.

You probably need Luke Jackson for an inning in the 6th or Chavez?

7th - TBD?

8th and 9th I still think JJ and Iggy should be available. They didn't pitch Saturday and despite working twice yesterday, JJ through 8 and 11 pitches; and Iggy through 12 and 8 pitches. Obviously you'd only throw them in the scenario we have a chance to steal the game

I'm sure there are modifications to the above, my point is simply I don't view it that we can't bridge 9 innings with the pen and that seems like a better option to me than going with a pitcher that literally spent the entire season in the minor leagues - and again, if the game by the 3rd / 4th inning feels like it's not going our way, you pivot, save the guns and go to the emergency starter. In a best of 3 series, you can't just punt game one imo. At the same time, will have the luxury of only using JJ / Iggy if we have a chance to win the game

Anderson and AJSS both have terrible command, better off going with the guy with the better stuff.

Elder, AJ and Anderson are the 3 likely options. I'd go Anderson but i mean, all of them have faults and could easily get lit up.

I trust the organization. Their evaluations have been eerily good this year. They knew when the right time to bring up SS was. Grant Holmes. Who before the season could have imagined giving Grant Holmes starts in the majors. We all thought they lost their mind with Reynaldo Lopez being a starter. I question why AJSS, Waldrep, and Anderson didnt get a shot when we needed a starter but I know there must have been a good reason. I also have no doubt they will pick who is the best option. Even if that means all options are bad. This kind of feels like Russian roulette but your almost certain theres a bullet in every chamber. But if we do win that game thats gotta be a hell of a lot of momentum for the team.

I think we have to go with someone, anyone who we expect to get 3 Innings from. If we can get through 3 tied or with the lead we got a chance and we can start trying to play the matchups with the relievers. If anyone blows it we can bring in the white flag relievers like Jackson and Chavez and just keep the highest leverage guys rested. I might even consider using Reynaldo Lopez again for an inning. Maybe bring in Iglesias for the 8th and if we get to 9th with lead go Lopez. Pitching him Monday was insane to me but at this point I say **** It if he can Monday he can pitch Tuesday. Its just an inning. Pitch him 1 inning every game. Might be the most we get considering he would be the game 3 starter. If we got a chance to win game 1 and we got a lead in the 8th or 9th I would be highly tempted. We might as well call him Old Reliable at this point,

This is what we should do.

What a day yesterday. The weirdest, strangest, oddest, craziest day of baseball Ive ever seen. I couldn't fathom a scenario where Jimenez and Iglesias combined give up 6 runs in a MONTH, much less an inning. Wacky! I didnt have the energy to watch the Braves potentially lose a game the other team wasn't even trying to win, so waited and to my surprise here's Holmes on the mound. Are they being tricky? No, sadly. Still, you could tell the Mets were not in that game. Swinging at pretty much everything. Lollygagging to first. Everyone knew they wanted the Brewers.

But the Braves got it done. The game that really did it down the stretch was Saturday's game - TDA coming through in the 9th. And now, again, like every year, we have starting pitching issues going into the playoffs. We can't seem to shake the injury luck in the last two weeks of September, despite the team's best efforts. At least this in this scenario we needed them all just to get in, so there was no option saving them down the stretch.

Sale not on the WC roster. AJSS and Elder are. I would have to go with AJSS and if things get out of hand let Elder just finish it off.

Holmes not on it either, i guess he wouldnt be available until a Game 3 in a pinch. But probably need as many healthy arms as possible.

Looks like Fried on 4 days rest tonight.. then tomorrow will be Lopez if they lose, someone else if they win with Lopez going game 3 if needed.

Just not seeing a deep run this year guys. Maybe twit will fall in love with the San Diego weather and just stay there in retirement.

Why would you use fried with the backend of pen worn down?

If you knew Sale was not available then Holmes should have started Game 1 and SS Game 2 only if we needed him. That logic would have made more sense.
