GDT: 9/7 Marlins at Braves

This is exactly how we will look in the playoffs. This team is going nowhere. Just not enough pitching...unless we just happen to get on some kind of incredible hot hitting streak.

I don’t mind losing games, but losing all these winnable games is so frustrating to watch and against average teams. These are games we are supposed to win.

We have one great starter, one great rookie (who is a rookie and will have a few days like this), and that’s it. The only chance we have is for two guys to come back on fire like Folty and Hamels. Have a better chance to win big on a scratch off ticket.

I only was able to watch the last three innings but TDA and Neck came up small for us today when the game was on the line.

Also, Markakis needs a day or two off. He’s pathetic right now

Under .260 AVG, under .750 OPS, strikeout rate up, walk-rate down, below league-average wrc+ against RHPs after today, defense rates poorly.

A couple tough RHPs throwing the next two days, but it's hard to say whether it'd be better to have Markakis for 4-5 PAs or Inciarte in the field, given the way the former is cratering. I'd probably go with the latter, tbh, but neither is a great option.

I haven’t actually looked at the record, but it seems our good fortune in one-run games last year has turned. Braves still +40 in RD after this game while the Phillies sit at -2. Phillies might get lucky and win the division though.

Watching the replays, still think the biggest mistake was sending Hechavarría from third on that hard groundball straight to Rojas.

Tie things up there, and every one of the subsequent chances becomes an opportunity to take the lead, instead of just tying it up.

It's possible. But it does help that the Braves play an easier schedule, and moreover the Phillies still have four additional games to play down the stretch, relative to the Braves.

Just checked it. Eh, we’re still 7-5. But that’s pretty reasonable compared to last year’s 28-16 record.

Our schedule on paper is a little easier, and they have 4 more games to play than we do. But it's possible they win the division, given they have a much better rotation and after Fried, you dont know what you'll get from a SP.

It's maddening we had ONE huge gaping hole and AA did nothing to address it. But on the other hand, i can get not trading big assets in this season. That being said, i know there was pitchers available better than Milone who wouldnt have cost a ton.

But i agree with your last part, the only hope is if Hamels comes back, and Folty looks like he normally does. Then you actually have a decent rotation to go with the pen and lineup.

Worst loss of the season. Maddening really but you could see it coming. The situational hitting has been horrible lately and the HRs have been masking that. Look at our numbers with RISP lately. Been horrendous

Holy cow. So the guys that have done well all year now all suck and should be shot in the sun. Neck will be fine and will get hot again. Relax. TDA has been great but gets pull happy. He will be fine. Relax folks. Bad games happen.

d'Arnaud is certainly not an issue; he's been great, this afternoon notwithstanding.

Markakis is a lot more worrisome, as he's almost entirely stopped elevating the ball, and—as I mentioned—his strikeout rate would be a career-worst (17.9%), his walk rate is two-percent lower than at any time in his Braves' tenure (8.3%), and he's actually hitting substantially worse against RHPs (which is an issue when it's 86% of his PA). In September, he's hit as many IFFBs as LDs (33.3% each).

Sure, he's only had a twenty-three game (84 PA) sample this season coming into today; but he's looked terrible the past week, and he's at an age where guys do just lose it overnight. Plus, his defense is bad, so—unlike Inciarte—he's not an asset if he's not hitting RHPs, at the very least, at league-average or above.

It is what it is. I doubt Schebler is a better option, if they haven't even tried him; and we've already hashed out why Pache should stay down the remainder of the season. So we just have to hope Markakis does post a classic Spartan Rebound for the remainder of September(/October).

Stupid fickle fans, and nothing more.

Actually I’m not totally sure what to make of TDA. He’s been good for us this year no doubt. He’s had a really high BAIP though. Is he due to regress or can he continue to be counted on for offense?

TDA has never been a good hitter. I think he has definitely been swinging above his head and some regression is due. Right now he’s having his best hitting season.

I'm not a fan of his defense either. His arm has gone downhill and he's not terribly agile behind the plate anymore.

This is absurd. d'Arnaud has been an excellent hitter all season, and added a lot of length to the Braves' lineup from the catcher's spot.

.314/.369/.545 OPS .914

136 OPS+ 141 wRC+ .386 wOBA.

Results line up with peripherals in what is certainly a career year.

He has crushed the ball this season. His hard hit rate is 52%, which means that his BABIP has actually not been lucky for the contact he has been making.

I guess what doesn't seem sustainable is his continuing to be so locked in that he crushes half the pitches he makes contact with.
