GDT 9/9

Would you go north of $25M AAV on Cespedes?

No way. I won't go past 20 and I would be scared there, but offense is so scarce we're gonna have to pay for it. I wouldn't mind the idea of making Jace a super sub and signing Desmond to play 2nd.

One thing I took away from the game last night was when Bethancourt grounded out early in the game he actually sprinted down the line. Hopefully he keeps up the energy. It was an easy out but he hustled down the line. Hopefully those words from management are sinking in

Maybe Cespedes' huge year will drive his value up and indirectly drive Heyward's value down a bit...

A guy can dream

Heyward has really done well after a slow start, but he just hasn't hit for much power this season. I think he still has solid power potential, but we will have to see if major league organizations see the same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if Heyward asked for (and received) a contract with an opt-out after three or four years similar to what J.D. Drew negotiated. He's still young and he may be willing to sign a contract that would give a slight discount (it will still be more than $20 MM AAV) for three or four years with the opportunity to either make more on the back-end or test free agency again.

I think this is exactly the type of contract he will sign, and the opt out clause will be the final nail in the coffin for his chances of coming back to Atlanta.

I wonder if he's vaulted himself ahead of J. Upton and Heyward in the free agency sweepstakes. Age works against him in that comparison and he wasn't anything to write home about in 2013 and 2014, but he's been pounding the ball since going to NYC. Walks about as much as Francoeur.

That's the reason I'd be leary of him. Whoever signs him will be buying high.

He could be a really solid bullpen piece next year. My understanding is that he has to be on the 25-man all of next season, though, or we have to offer them back to the Rockies.

If Heyward's price can come down, I'm all on board with bringing him back... Just afraid the John's won't be interested in bringing him back at all.
