GDT: Braves @ Red Sox 9/1; #MyNewAce's follow up

Dob making fun of ppl who wanted donaldson and bumgardner on Twitter.

I have to think dob wanted bumgardner, anyone have proof? Seems exactly like the kind of guy dob would love.

Not sure how the athletic hires the two worst guys

I think he is going to slug 450 plus. For me to not want to upgrade that obp has to get up to 325. He is not close to that yet.

Again he is still young and has a history of making adjustments and improving over time.

Braves seem to love him.

Riley and waters hitting would be huge bc acuna is starting to make real money after the strike. Dansby will need money. Ff will get extended and start to decline.

Acuna doesnt make what he should be getting. He doesnt start to get big money til 22. 2021 is 5 mil.

The Braves have a realistic path to having an above average home grown player at every position which is shocking given the focus on pitching. Our hit rate on position players has been very lucky.

In a non-Covid world, I would feel confident we could feel sign free agents to fill the SP holes. Now, I think AA is going to need to try to strike gold with reclamation projects.

Careful, there were quite a few around here who thought Bumgarner was the missing piece to a WS champion.

Was listening to the game on SiriusXM and they had the Red Sox announcers. They said Ozuna’s bomb was something like only the 9th (can’t remember the exact number but very very low like that) ball that had ever reached that camera area. Hank Greenberg in the 30s was the first. They said 436 was no way correct. Lol

I mean I've never seen a ball hit in the camera well there. Good lord. You could hear the bench too when that was launched. Not your typical homer.

We need the DH next from now on. lol

To be fair AA was trying to get Donaldson too and I think for good reason despite what he's done this year.

I never recall anything linking us to Bumgarner too for obvious reasons, imo. He was clearly done being a front of the rotation guy.

Coincidentally if any teams want him in the offseason he can be had at probably 60% if his current deal.

If he was in fact slowed because of an injury that is healed it would be an interesting buy low candidate. Im still a believer.

I don't listen to DOB's podcast b/c it's terrible. But I bet if someone did they would find him talking up Bumgardener.

I think AA wanted JD, just for a certain number of years. IIRC JD said as much. We made an offer but it wasn't in the ballpark of the Twins.

If we would have signed JD to a one year deal and he was sucky and hurt it would be just like Hamels. I would say this sucks but it was a worthwhile gamble.

I was shocked we gave a multi year deal to a relief pitcher with draft pick compensation. Shocked. I'd say it will be interesting to see if AA is willing to sign big multiyear FA deals, but who knows with this environment.

I think people are not making a big enough deal about the next TWO years. This year teams lost a ton of money and they are scared. The FA and budgeting time is likely to happen before we have any assurances that COVID is handled. Then everyone knows 2022 is going to be a strike. So people are not going to want to have a bunch of money tied up in 2022 or pay big bonuses in 2021. IF the the FA class is not getting offers, then it will make the labor issues more troubling than they are now. It will really suck when we play this bastard season and we lose 2022 (maybe our first normal season after COVID) to labor issues (greedy owners and players who won't change with the times).

That one surprised me as well. I thought available resources would go elsewhere.

The only media member I recall pumping Bumgardner was his Athletic coworker, Jeff Schultz.

If you could tell me he was going to post a 3.9 FIP like he did recently then I would take him if Arizona paid 10 million of his salary. The problem is he posted those numbers in San Fran. On the road the last 2 years he has posted road FIPs of 4.51 and 4.99. The main culprit is obvious. Homeruns. San Fran suppresses them hard and he doesn't get that benefit when leaving that stadium. He's just not as good as he once was.

Looks like he's including himself in the criticism.

Yeah, I'm as happy to mock DOB as anyone else, but he's clearly being self-deprecating there.

(AA clearly wanted to bring back Donaldson, but that's a whole other conversation)

I sort of hate when folks do this. ‘Sure glad we didn’t sign x player’. There is literally no garauntee that JD wouldn’t be healthy and mashing here in the Atl.

436 seems short, wonder if it was 115+ MPH

"Only" 110.6 mph EV, good for the 9th hardest hit ball by a Brave this year.

Statcast doesn't understand spin axis on a batted ball when calculating distance (afaik), so identical EV/LA hits will have the same distance regardless if they had side spin to RF or backspin to CF.

But as far as pure ball smashing, we've seen several balls hit much harder in 2020.

I'm glad AA didn't give JD anything close to $92M, and I don't even know what JD is doing this year. Honestly couldn't care less.

What I do care about is his latest short term slugger is once again paying off handsomely.
