GDT: July 8th 2013 - Braves @ Marlins

From the Nats perspective this reminds me of why its so tough to be chasing from behind. They have some momentum and cut it to 4 only to have a tough one run loss, we win in 14 and now its back to a more comfortable 5 just like that. Really would like to keep this at 6 plus.

You know your fickle when your on the edge of panic when we have the biggest division lead in baseball.

I don't think it's fickle to want the Braves to do better than they are doing because they have the talent to do much better than they are. Look at the Pirates. Which team is more talented? The Braves and it's not even close. But which team has the better record? Which team has been more consistent? The Pirates.

Simmons now has an OBP of .283. BJ is down to .266. But Chris Johnson is a .374 and can't get out of the 8th spot. Absolutely stupid.

I had great timing last night. Got in to see the 6 run 14th. Heard that the Marlins had gotten 24 consecutive Braves out and wasnt surprised. Scored 6 runs and I wasnt surprised.

Nothing surprises me with this team anymore. Happy we gained a game on Washington too. Kill there momentum a little bit.

I was listening to the radio driving home from work and they were talking about what a HUGE opportunity we have missed by not running away with this division. It's amazing to me how critical people are being of us. Are we supposed to win the division by 20 games? How many people picked us to win the division to begin with? Being 4-5 games up at the All Star break is a terrific accomplishment.

I only really got to see the boxscore of this game, but I did note and was pleased that Fredi used Kimbrel before we had the lead. I've seen too many times the away team losing in extras without their best reliever getting in the game.

no, but with the nats at .500 we should have a bigger lead than we do. Since the hot start we're around .500 and if we can't break out of they'll probably catch us.

A decent division championship team should be around 20 games over .500 which would be a 10 game lead over a .500 team. Anything beyond that is a little too much to expect, IMO.

I think the issue that myself and many others have with what the Braves have done is that since they were 12-1 they have gone 39-37. This team is far too talented to only be hovering at 2 games over .500 over an extended stretch like that. The only reason they still have a 5-game lead in the division is because the Nats haven't had a stretch where they've won 12 of 15 or something to that extent. But they're perfectly capable of doing that. That's why many people like myself aren't content with where the Braves are. They should be so much better than they are.

Bingo. It's great having a five game lead right now, but the fact is the Braves had as good as chance as they'll get all season to really put some distance between them and Washington. I am sure before the beginning of the season we would all be thrilled to be where we are at now without knowing what we know now. Factor in our hot start and the Nationals pretty mediocre nearly three months to start the season off and disappointment sets in.

I'm happy with where we are knowing what we know. Players have underpeformed, the bullpen has had a rash of injuries and we still are winning. That's why it's so important to get off to a good start, you can play 500 ball for a long period of time and still be in good shape. This team has several flaws but they have done a good job of staying in 1st all year. They were never going to run away from the Nationals. They aren't that good and the Nats are not that bad.

2011 should tell us all we need to know about not being content with any lead no matter the size.
