GDT: Phillies vs Braves 9/3/14 12:10pm first pitch....

Betts is probably going to be a good little player, but 1) he is not a centerfielder and 2) he is not a good swap for a cost-controlled catcher/bat the magnitude of Gattis.

From the scouting reports I have read he will be able to translate there because of his speed. Of course he could be a very good defensive second baseman but I think Peraza will be there soon enough.

Everyone knows I love Gattis but I think to get a potential leadoff hitter with the upside of Betts is worth the risk. I really think its a fair trade for both sides.

Betts also hit for a lot of power in the minors and with his speed he is going to post some solid SLG numbers to go along with probably a 370 OBP.

Actually, elite (or the potential to be) defensively plus suspect/unproven offensive skills makes you more like Andrelton Simmons than Chris Johnson IMO. Good MLB teams are built on pitching and defense--particularly defense up the middle. We have one great defender at those four key positions now and I'd like to add another.

When Molina came up with the Cardinals he was superior defensively but not much at the plate. He got the chance and made the most of it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Bethancourt is Molina but he has a similar foundation of defensive skills. He's the guy I'd build my team's future around at catcher.

Clearly, there are other opinions and factors that favor Gattis. I understand those. I'd still rather go forward with Bethancourt behind the plate for the reasons I've articulated in my last couple of posts.

I don't disagree. The previous poster made the Johnson comparison. If you are going to be Chris Johnson offensively, you better be Andrelton Simmons defensively. I have no idea on how well Bethancourt will do with his bat. Whatever fits-and-starts he's had defensively in his brief time in the big leagues, he has to be better than both Gattis and Laird.

Looked like Freeman was pissed off at the end of the game.

We got a win, but another blown opportunity losing two of three to these rejects.

Figured they'd lose to Hamels, he's owned us all year.

Losing last night sucked though.

Sad thing is they're still in striking distance in the WC race

Have to start actually gaining the ground at some point. I don't think Milwaukee is going to be this bad to close out the year, and we have to hold off the Pirates, too. If we can find a way to get to 87-88 wins, we might be able to snatch a spot. Going to have to hit, though. And beat teams we're supposed to beat.

With another Chris Johnson bat in the lineup? The point is to improve, not side step.

A Chris Johnson at a defense-centric position. Problem for the Braves is that they have to rely on getting above-average production out of positions where a lot of teams sneak by with a defense-first guy. If we had a reliable bat at 3B, we could afford to have a guy or two with Johnson's 2014 production numbers who play good defense. Johnson neither hits nor plays good defense. But hey, he almost won the batting title last year and he walked twice today (it's cloudy in Minnesota tonight so I can't tell if it's a blood moon or not). Johnson walking twice in one game has to portend the apocalypse.

Pirates and Giants lose. Brewers losing. Good results tonight.

We arent catching the Giants.

It's possible if the Cubs hold on we could be tied with the Brewers entering Friday, pretty crazy. They have a 4-game set in Stl this weekend.

Brewers will have lost 8 in a row if the score holds tonight. They are in free fall. The last spot will be between the Braves and Pirates.

My point is that the offense is what sucks here. Not the defense. When you're scoring 1 run a game and getting shut out, it doesn't matter what the defense is doing at that point. If you trade Gattis, start Bethancourt and replace Johnson with a guy who can hold his own with the glove and bat at 3B....all you did was essentially trade Chris Johnson for Chris Johnson with defense. We're still scoring 1 run a game. It's a lot of maneuvering just to upgrade the defense at catcher while keeping the offense just as bad as it already is.

I think everyone here except Niners and Dalyn would agree with this.

I support having a platoon at 3B. Johnson is too good against lefties to replace (one of the best in the game right now). Players over 100 PA he is #2 in average and OBP.
