Quite the embarrassing month for the Ayatollah. Absolutely dog walked by Israel and China shutdown the biggest card they had to play (closing off oil shipments).

our largest military base in the region is in Qatar...it hosts over 10,000 American military...someone had to explain this to Trump in his first term
 
So if Iran is indeed willing to just pretend to strike back against us destroying their nuclear sites, am I really to believe they wouldn’t have just agreed to a deal that didn’t involve a bombing? Like what the fuck do we pay Marco Rubio for?
 
Trump’s rhetoric makes this seem like a one and done now that Iran got the symbolic gesture out of their system with a few duck fart missile launches. I predict will see Israel’s bomb campaign slow down soon and Iran will go back to status quo of empty threats.

Ultimately not sure much was accomplished except the psychological damage to Iran (which is a decent benefit)

It might, though I’m not willing to grant without evidence that Iran wasn’t open to just not being at war with Israel and a nuclear deal with the United States. If the United States brokers peace by blowing up a bunch of a country’s stuff on so that its ally will stop being at war with that other country, that’s not necessarily an achievement in peace, no?

We’re all adults who understand what that “stuff” is, I don’t agree with the position that we have some obvious right to stop them from their nuclear endeavors through military force.

Basically, I don’t see why this is preferable. Giving Iran money in exchange for cooperation is a good way to build a lasting peace. It’d perhaps be helpful if we were honest and that bottom graphic also featured a giant pile of money, because we spent a whole bunch of it dropping those bombs.

The world is a much better place without Iran possessing nuclear weaponry. If we bought that with 12 bunker buster bombs and 12 days of war, that’s a trade even a libertarian would make.

I’m skeptical the ceasefire will last, but I applaud Trump for negotiating it swiftly

(Meanwhile we are going on 3 years of war in Ukraine),

I don’t ever understand the strict adherence to an approach that has shown no success over the past 40 years in the region. If the obvious answers were so obvious, why don’t they ever seem to work?

There’s a largely bipartisan consensus in the west that we must be aggressive in geopolitics that I find to be lacking. Do bad actors exist? Yes. Is Iran one of them? Also yes. But I don’t think dropping bombs is the answer, nor do I think bleeding them dry of money does. The people within that nation will suffer as a result of those actions, and I think it perpetuates the cycle.

I also personally take issue with the idea that we can spend money covertly toppling regimes and blowing things up around the world but when Iran gives money to groups sympathetic to their causes that we need to clutch our pearls. If a terrorist blows up a town square it’s cause for action, but if we do a drone strike that kills even more people, it’s considered just. A lot of American geopolitics rests on the belief that violence committed “legitimately” is morally justifiable and violence committed “illegitimately” or against our interests is not. I reject that world view, though I’m aware others won’t join me there.

That’s cool, I don’t need company here. Nobody is asking me to handle the Middle East, but my beliefs on foreign affairs are sincere and not steeped in Trump Bad, Dems Good.
