Of course.

But there is similarly a huge cost (short and long term, direct and indirect) to destabilizing the world’s energy supply for an extended period, creating a failed state with a power vacuum, spending hundreds of billions, weakening relationships with allies, enriching Russia, losing critical military assets in the region, etc etc.

It’s why understanding the objective is crucial so we can assess these trade offs more completely. I applaud Rubio for attempting to do that. In absence of clear messaging, conspiracies will take root in both the left and right

SInce this administration is doing all of that anyhow, it would be nice to have as a benefit the removal of their nuclear capability. Btw I don't think the tradeoff should involve all of those thangs. But we don't get to choose who is president. Oh wait. We do.

It’d be a terrible outcome. That’s been true for decades without change. What has changed is the position of many key members of this administration on how to address that threat, without any coherent attempt to explain their 180 to Americans. Instead they’ve resorted to gaslighting.

Trump sold himself as the master negotiator who could get a deal with Iran to avoid the very scenario we’re in now. It was a major part of his value proposition to a large constituency that now feels duped. His deputy chief of staff warned the country that a vote for Harris was a vote to send their kids into war with Iran. His director of national intelligence was selling “no war in Iran” t-shirts.

When in the run up to the election, JD Vance was saying a potential war with Iran would be against America’s interests, would be a huge distraction of resources, and would be massively expensive to our country, were any MAGA voters on this board calling him out?

It is unfortunate because a coherent case is there to be made. But gaslighting is hard habit to break.

Unfortunate that so many people fell for the con. The con and the gaslighting are not terribly skillful. People were ok with being lied to. If someone feels duped they weren't paying attention.

Who is JD Vance. He's run through a dozen different names. And almost as many political incarnations. Can anyone be surprised at yet another flip? And why would any MAGA voter care? When they have reconciled themselves to the lies and cons and gaslighting on a grand scale.
